Ten straight for Pirates men

The Whitworth Pirates men swam their way to a 10th straight Northwest Conference championship at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash., on Sunday.

Whitworth’s women finished second to Puget Sound in the women’s championship race.

The Whitworth men piled up 796 points, easily outdistancing runnerup Whitman with 572.

Puget Sound’s women finished with 623 points, just ahead of the Pirates’ 606.

On the final day of the meet, Whitworth’s Rory Buck won the men’s 200 breaststroke with an NCAA DIII automatic qualifying time of 2:02.55.

The Pirates’ Katherine Duvall set a conference record with a provisional qualifying time of 2:03.5 in the women’s 200 backstroke.

The Whitworth women’s 400 free relay team of Jennifer Benson, Anna Case, Duvall, and Micole Lecoq picked up a win.

Baseball

Landon Scott went 2 for 3 and drove in a run and the Whitworth Pirates (5-3) took advatange of seven Puget Sound (2-2) errors to beat the Loggers 7-3 in the final game of the Swing into Spring Baseball Classic at Gesa Stadium in Pasco.

Carson Blumenthal (1-0) went five innings to pick up the win. He allowed three runs – two earned – on seven hits. Jason Renner allowed one hit in four shutout innings to notch the save.

Softball

The North Idaho Cardinals (4-12, 2-6) rolled to a 24-6, 16-7 doubleheader sweep over the Colorado Northwestern Spartans (4-10, 1-7) in Scenic West Athletic Conference play in Rangely, Colo.

Kasara Wise went 3 for 5 with a home run, double, four runs batted in and four runs scored to spark the Cardinals to a five-inning win in the opener.

In the nightcap, NIC breezed to the win behind home runs from Brianna Bishop, Shelby Carter, Ashley Moon, Nicole Atkinson and Jessica Lupinacci.

Hockey

Max Flanagan tallied three goals and two assists to spark the Beaver Valley Nitehawks to an 11-2 romp over the visiting Spokane Braves in KIJHL action. Uriah Machuga and Nick Redding scored for the Braves.
