Newport crash claims lives of two Priest River women

From staff reports
Two Priest River women were killed when the car they were riding in crashed Tuesday night south of Newport. Mary E. Page, 62, and Maxine A. Chappell, 90, were pronounced dead at the scene, a news release from the Washington State Patrol said. The driver, Ronald J. Chappell, 70, was taken to Newport Hospital, where he was treated and released. Chappell was driving his 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass north on state Highway 2 around 10:30 p.m. when the car left the road, hit a fence and a ditch, then flipped over in a yard. Ronald Chappell and Page were wearing seat belts, the WSP said. Troopers could not tell whether Maxine Chappell was wearing her seat belt. Drugs and alcohol were not involved, and no charges are anticipated, the WSP said.
