North Spokane standoff ends peacefully

A man threatened to burn his mother’s house down, kill people and kill himself, prompting a standoff tonight that ended peacefully.

Spokane police responded to the scene on the 7400 block of North Perry Street about 7:15 p.m., said Sgt. Tracie Meidl. Hostage negotiators managed to talk the unidentified 50-year-old man into surrendering, and he was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.

The man, who told police he was armed with a gun, lives in the duplex home with his mother, Meidl said. The other unit in the duplex, as well as homes in the immediate vicinity, were evacuated, though some residents elected to stay home.

The SWAT team, Spokane Fire Department and paramedics responded.
