California remains tied with Washington for first place

Jorge Gutierrez and David Kravish scored 17 points each to lead California to a 77-63 win over Oregon State on Saturday night at Berkeley, Calif., to keep the Bears tied for first place in Pac-12 men’s basketball with Washington.

Justin Cobbs had 10 points and 13 assists for the Bears , while Allen Crabbe scored 16.

Devon Collier and Roberto Nelson had 14 points each and Angus Brandt 11 for Oregon State. Jared Cunningham, the Pac-12’s leading scorer, had 10 points.

After losing a 12-point first-half lead and trailing 34-32 at halftime, Cal opened the second half with a 27-13 run to build a 59-47 lead with 9:25 remaining.

Harper Kamp and Gutierrez had eight points each during the surge. After Crabbe drilled a 3-point shot, Gutierrez put the Bears up 57-47 with a three-point play. Then Gutierrez scored inside, bumping Cal’s lead to 12 points.

Colorado 55, Utah 48: Andre Roberson had 12 points and 15 rebounds and Austin Dufault added 11 points as the Buffaloes defeated the Utes at Salt Lake City.

The win was the second this season over the Utes, who lost 73-33 to the Buffaloes on New Year’s Eve in the Pac-12 debut for both teams.

Colorado guard Carlon Brown suffered through a miserable shooting performance – going 2 for 12 – and finished with five points in his return to Salt Lake City, where he played three seasons for Utah.

Jason Washburn led Utah with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Hines added 12 points on four 3-pointers.

The Utes trailed by as many as nine points in the second half, but tied the score at 44 with 4:23 remaining. Colorado then went on a 6-0 run, Dufault got a late block and the Buffs sank key free throws to secure the win.

St. John’s 66, UCLA 63: D’Angelo Harrison scored 22 points, Phil Greene added the biggest of St. John’s offensive rebounds with 6.5 seconds to play and the Red Storm snapped a four-game losing streak with a victory over the Bruins at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Jermine Anderson made 1 of 2 free throws for UCLA with 4.7 seconds left. Moe Harkless of St. John’s missed the front of a 1-and-1 with 3 seconds left, but the ball bounced around for a second or two and the Bruins didn’t get off a good shot to tie at the buzzer.
