WSU women’s rally falls short in loss to ASU

Washington State’s spirited comeback attempt fell short in a 47-42 Pac-12 Conference women’s basketball loss to Arizona State Saturday in Tempe, Ariz.

Down 19 with less than 10 minutes to play, the Cougars closed the gap and could have tied the game with 3 seconds to play, but Rosetta Adzasu’s 3-pointer was off the mark.

Sage Romberg had 11 points and Jazmine Perkins added eight points and 13 rebounds for Washington State. Perkins became WSU’s all-time leader in games played with 116.

Alex Earl and Janae Fulcher scored 11 points apiece for the Sun Devils, who opened the game on an 18-4 run.

The loss dropped the Cougars to 10-17 overall and 4-11 in the Pac-12. Arizona State improved to 18-8 and 9-6.

Washington State will play at Washington next Sunday.

Whitworth 90, Willamette 67: The Pirates hit almost 61 percent of their shots in the second half en route to a Northwest Conference win over Willamette in the final game of the season for both teams.

Whitworth finished 7-9 – good for fifth place in the conference – and 11-14 overall.

The Bearcats (0-16 and 1-24) didn’t look like a last-place team early in the second half, leading 38-35 before Whitworth rallied.

In the next 12 minutes, the Pirates outscored Willamette 44-14, taking their largest lead, 79-52, with 6 minutes left.

Lauren Picha led a balanced scoring effort for Whitworth with 16 points. Kayla Johnson added 15, Emily Guthrie had 14 and Lexi Belcher 12.

Idaho 87, Nevada 86: Krissy Karr hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to lift the Vandals past the Wolf Pack in a Western Athletic Conference game in Reno, Nev.

Karr also hit a 3 to tie the game at 84 with 15 seconds to play.

Keri Arendse and Alyssa Charlston scored 21 points apiece to lead Idaho, which improved to 9-18 overall and 4-7 in the WAC.

Nevada fell to 5-20 and 1-9 in conference games.

Columbia Basin 70, CC Spokane 60: Jennifer Noon scored 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Hawks (23-2, 11-1) past the Sasquatch (6-17, 1-10) in an NWAACC game at Spokane Community College.

Columbia Basin outscored CCS 47-34 in the second half to erase a three-point halftime deficit.

Breeana Wilson scored 13 points and Jorden Brons added nine points and eight rebounds for the Sasquatch, who were playing without leading scorer Laikyn Brophy due to a concussion.

CCS plays at conference foe Yakima Valley on Wednesday.

North Idaho 54, Snow 35: Angela Woods led a balanced effort with 11 points and Julia Salmio added seven points and 11 rebounds as the Cardinals (21-4, 10-2) beat the Badgers (14-12, 7-5) in a Scenic West Athletic Conference game in Coeur d’Alene.

North Idaho, which earned its fourth straight win, won the rebounding battle 43-33.

The Cardinals host Southern Idaho on Saturday.
