In brief: Geiger inmate facing charge

An inmate assaulted another inmate at Geiger Corrections Center Friday evening, officials said Monday.

Anthony Neil Carson, 33, was moved to the Spokane County Jail to face a second-degree assault charge after entering the victim’s room and punching him in the face and body repeatedly, according to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim, whose name has not been released, received stitches and treatment for a facial fracture at a local hospital.

Carson “apparently felt the victim inmate was spreading rumors and talking bad about him,” according to a news release by sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Mark Gregory.

Carson was serving a 180-day sentence for a District Court bench warrant, according to jail records.

He was convicted last year of possession of a controlled substance, driving while intoxicated and third-degree theft.

Romney’s son in Spokane Valley

One of Mitt Romney’s sons will be in Spokane Valley today to host a training session in advance of the state’s March 3 caucuses.

Josh Romney, 36, will be at Center Place, 2426 Discovery Place, at 12:15 p.m. for the event, sponsored by his father’s presidential campaign. He spent Monday visiting caucus training sites in Vancouver, Tacoma and Bellevue, and stopped in Olympia to meet with some Republican lawmakers and other supporters.

Romney says his dad, who is in a tough primary race with Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul, is the best candidate to beat President Barack Obama.

Santorum and Paul made campaign visits to the Inland Northwest last week.

Mitt Romney is scheduled to visit the state on March 1, in advance of Washington state’s nonbinding straw poll caucus.

Thefts indicate koi pond fan

LONGVIEW, Wash. – First, the burglar took a pond filter, then, a pump in another break-in.

After a $400 koi disappeared over the weekend from the Tsugawa Nursery in Woodland, it was pretty clear a water gardener had turned bad.

The daughter of the owners, Karen Tsugawa, told Cowlitz County sheriff’s deputies she believes someone is building a pond with stolen parts and fish.

The Daily News reports the nursery has been selling exotic plants and fish for more than 30 years, and this is the first time it has been hit by a rash of burglaries.
