COLLEGE MEN: Cody Zeller scored 18 points and Victor Oladipo added 13, leading No. 18 Indiana past No. 5 Michigan State 70-55 on Tuesday night in Bloomington, Ind., its third victory over a top five team this basketball season.

The Hoosiers (22-7, 10-7 Big Ten) upset No. 1 Kentucky and No. 2 Ohio State in December and now the Spartans, who could have clinched their second outright Big Ten title in four seasons with a victory.

Michigan State (24-6, 13-4) can still win the outright crown with a victory over No. 10 Ohio State on Sunday.

It was Indiana coach Tom Crean’s first win over Tom Izzo, his former boss at Michigan State.

Duke rolls behind Kelly: Ryan Kelly scored a career-high 23 points and No. 4 Duke held on to beat host Wake Forest 79-71 at Winston-Salem, N.C., for its seventh straight win. Kelly put up 20 points against the Demon Deacons for the third straight time, and Seth Curry finished with 15 points for the Blue Devils (26-4, 13-2 Atlantic Coast Conference).

Duke led by 23 points with 91/2 minutes left before Wake Forest made things tense late.

Vanderbilt upsets Florida: John Jenkins hit six 3-pointers and finished with 22 points, and Vanderbilt beat No. 16 Florida 77-67 at Nashville, Tenn., to clinch a first-round bye in the Southeastern Conference tournament.

The Commodores (21-9, 10-5) outshot the nation’s top 3-point shooting team behind Jenkins, and he easily topped his average of 3.9 3-pointers by hitting his first five from beyond the arc. They are tied with Florida for second in the SEC with one game left in the regular season.

Wade said he offered apology at game

NBA: Insisting he meant no harm, Dwyane Wade revealed that he has apologized to Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant multiple times for a blood-drawing, nose-breaking foul during the All-Star game.

The first of those apologies, Wade said, came during the game when he saw Bryant’s face had been bloodied. Wade also said he sent the Lakers’ star a message after the game in Orlando, Fla., on Sunday night.

“I don’t care what I’m portrayed as,” Wade said after Miami’s first practice following the league’s All-Star break. “It’s unfortunate, obviously. I don’t want to ever hurt anybody in this game, especially on a freak play like that. It’s unfortunate. I send my apologies. But it’s not intentional. If it’s something I did intentionally, it’d be a different story.”

Rose ignites Bulls’ rally: Derrick Rose scored 32 points, including the go-ahead jumper with 19.4 seconds left, and the Chicago Bulls closed with an 8-0 run to beat the visiting New Orleans Hornets 99-95.

Joakim Noah had 15 points and 16 rebounds for the Bulls and Carlos Boozer and Luol Deng added 14 points apiece. Rose scored six points in Chicago’s final run.

Ovechkin’s OT goal caps stunning win

NHL: Alex Ovechkin scored at 1:35 of overtime after Troy Brouwer tallied twice in the final 31/2 minutes of regulation, giving the Washington Capitals an improbable 3-2 win over the visiting New York Islanders.

Brouwer cut the deficit to 2-1 with 3:29 left in regulation, scoring from the right of the net after taking an excellent crossing pass from Mathieu Perreault.

Then, after Capitals coach Dale Hunter pulled goalie Michal Neuvirth, Brouwer deflected a shot by Brooks Laich past Nabokov to tie it with 25.5 seconds to play.

Charging Ottawa blanks Bruins: Robin Lehner stopped 32 shots for his first career shutout and Erik Karlsson scored the lone goal, lifting surging Ottawa to a 1-0 win over host Boston.

With the win, the Senators moved one point behind the Northeast Division-leading Bruins, who have played four fewer games than Ottawa. Ottawa won for the sixth time in seven games and sent the Bruins to their fourth loss in six.

MISCELLANY: Texas A&M and Missouri agreed to pay $12.4 million each to leave the Big 12 and join the Southeastern Conference in July.

The Big 12 is adding TCU and West Virginia next season to replace Texas A&M and Missouri.

NFL moves opener: The NFL says it will open the season Wednesday, Sept. 5, to avoid a conflict with President Barack Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention the following night.

The season usually begins on a Thursday night, but Commissioner Roger Goodell announced the change. The Super Bowl champion New York Giants will host the season-opener at MetLife Stadium against a team to be announced at a later date.

49ers lock up Brooks: Linebacker Ahmad Brooks signed a six-year contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers taking him through the 2017 season.
