Woman found dead in north Spokane was shot in head

A Spokane woman found dead in her home on Sunday was shot in the head, officials say. The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the woman as Kimberly R. Schmidt, 34, and determined her cause of death during an autopsy Tuesday. Though the autopsy has not concluded whether her death was a homicide, sheriff’s detectives are investigating it as one. Deputies were called to Schmidt’s home in the 100 block of East Regina Avenue about 2:45 p.m. Sunday after a family member found her dead. Schmidt has a daughter and is a 1995 graduate of Shadle Park High School and a 2004 graduate of Eastern Washington University, where she studied accounting.
