Died Bowling great Don Carter, who used an unorthodox style to flourish as a genuine sports celebrity during the game’s golden age on TV, has died. He was 85. Carter died at his home in Miami on Thursday night, the Professional Bowlers Association said Friday. He recently was hospitalized with pneumonia complicated by emphysema. Carter, known as “Mr. Bowling,” was the game’s original superstar. He became his sport’s most recognizable name at a time when alleys were thriving across the country and bowling was starting to assert itself as a fixture on television.

Allowed A judge in Las Vegas gave Floyd Mayweather Jr. until June 1 to turn himself in to serve a 90-day jail sentence for his guilty plea in a domestic violence case, allowing the undefeated boxer to meet contractual obligations for a Cinco de Mayo fight against an as-yet-named opponent.

Fired The state trooper involved in the New Year’s Eve collision that killed the wife of Atlanta Braves trainer Jeff Porter was fired, Georgia’s public safety commissioner said. Ex-trooper Donald Crozier “failed to use due regard when traveling through the intersection” through a red light, according to a police report on the crash that killed 54-year-old Kathy Porter and injured her husband, teenage son and his friend in downtown Atlanta.

Fined Green Bay Packers linebacker Erik Walden was fined $15,000 by the NFL for roughing the passer, and San Diego Chargers linebacker Antwan Barnes was docked $25,000 for unnecessary physical contact with an official.

Elevated The World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals retooled their staff while Dave Duncan takes a leave of absence that could lead to his retirement, elevating Derek Lilliquist to pitching coach and Dyar Miller to bullpen coach. Lilliquist filled in as pitching coach when the 66-year-old Duncan took a leave of absence last August to be with his wife, Jeanine, following surgery to remove a brain tumor.

Sentenced Michigan Wolverines wide receiver Darryl Stonum will spend the next 10 days in jail after violating probation in a drunken-driving case. A district court judge in Ann Arbor sent Stonum to the Washtenaw County jail.

Sidelined Former U.S. Open golf champion Lucas Glover has withdrawn from the season-opening Tournament of Champions after spraining his right knee while paddleboarding.

Stripped French rider Gregory Bauge and the French sprint team were stripped of gold medals from the world track cycling championships for a violation of anti-doping rules.
