Pirates’ Friedt big in double-OT victory

Felix Friedt hit a 3-pointer and two free throws in the final 46 seconds to lift the Whitworth men’s basketball team to a 103-94 double-overtime win over Pacific Lutheran on Friday night in Parkland, Wash.

PLU’s James Conti hit a 3 at the buzzer to force the first overtime. In the first overtime, Conti made two free throws to send the game into another overtime.

Idris Lasisi scored 20 points and Wade Gebbers had 19 points and seven assists for the Pirates (10-2, 3-0). Friedt finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Conti had a game-high 25 points for the Lutes (5-7, 2-1).

Whitworth plays at Puget Sound tonight.

Women’s basketball

Emily Guthrie and Kayla Johnson scored 19 points apiece as Whitworth beat Pacific Lutheran 80-67 in Northwest Conference play at Olson Auditorium in Parkland, Wash.

The win was the Pirates’ first at PLU since 1994.

Whitworth (5-7, 1-2) took control of the back-and-forth affair with about 10 minutes to go, outscoring the Lutes 27-13 to end the game.

Samantha Potter exploded for 36 points for PLU (4-8, 1-2). The Pirates play at Puget Sound today.
