Where to toss bulbs?

The Dec. 25 edition carried a column subtitled “Everything you need to know about phase-out of the old-fashioned bulb.” The article was informative with one notable omission: How does one dispose of the mercury contained in the new-fashioned bulbs? Mercury poisons our water, damages our health and kills fish.

The majority of my fellow Americans will simply toss the new-fashioned bulb into the trash. It’s easiest. It seems reasonable that a safe means of disposing of the mercury should be in place prior to mandating the mass utilization of the new-fashioned bulb.

The introduction of hazardous waste days at local fire stations might encourage the safe disposal of the mercury as well as other dangerous materials and would assist in reducing the contamination of our good Earth.
