Central Valley hands University 56-50 loss

For the third time in the last four games, a 4A Greater Spokane League boys basketball team has knocked off 3A University, the preseason favorite to win the league championship.

It was Central Valley’s turn Tuesday as the visiting Bears topped the Titans 56-50.

The win kept CV (7-3 overall, 5-2 league) in a three-way tie for first. The loss dropped U-Hi (7-3, 5-3) into a three-way tie for fourth.

The Titans outscored CV 16-7 in the second quarter to take a 28-21 lead into halftime. But the Bears got hot in the second half, outscoring U-Hi 35-22.

CV did it behind the 3-point line. The Bears made 8 of 13 from long range to U-Hi’s 4 of 14.

Austin Rehkow led CV with 17 points, including 3 of 3 3-pointers, and four rebounds. Anthony Brommer had five rebounds and Garrett Sawyer had four assists.

Brett Bailey led U-Hi with 19 points including 3 of 5 from 3-point range. He also had six blocked shots.

Lewis and Clark 65, North Central 56: The visiting Tigers (8-2, 6-2) rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring the upset-minded Indians (2-8, 2-6) 24-7.

NC led 35-24 at halftime. But LC hit three straight 3-pointers, two by Jeff Livingston, to open the fourth and spur the rally. Livingston finished with 16 and Tanner Johnson had a game-high 20.

Chase McDuffie led NC with 15 and Jamil Foster had 14.

Shadle Park 58, Mead 48: The Panthers (1-9, 1-7) pulled within 48-47 with 3:41 remaining, but freshman George Pillmai hit a key 3-pointer for the Highlanders (7-3, 5-3).

Nick Bettinson led Shadle with 17 points and Kionte Brown had 13. Forrest Baker led Mead with 17 and Thomas Kautzman had 13.

Shadle was 8 for 8 from the foul line in the fourth.

Gonzaga Prep 61, Mt. Spokane 48: The Bullpups (6-4, 6-2) were cruising along, leading 54-27 through three quarters.

But visiting Mt. Spokane (2-8, 1-7) didn’t quit, outscoring G-Prep 23-7 in the final quarter.

Reed Hopkins led G-Prep with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Mac Johnson had 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Jordan Weems led Mt. Spokane with 14 points.

Ferris 68, Rogers 52: Big first and fourth periods propelled the Saxons (7-3, 5-3) over the visiting Pirates (4-5, 3-5).

Ferris outscored Rogers 20-8 in the first and 23-10 in the fourth. Jeff Hahn led the Saxons with 17 points, 13 in the second half. Nathan Galgalo and Carson Fuller each had 15 and Fuller had 10 rebounds. Amaujae Daniels led Rogers with 16 points.
