In brief: King speech reading planned for Monday

SPOKANE – Providence Cultural Diversity Committee will present two Martin Luther King Jr. Day events Monday.

The Rev. Happy Watkins will deliver King’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech. There will be time for reflection, music and refreshments.

The events will be from noon to 1 p.m. in the Health Education Center of Providence Holy Family Hospital, 5633 N. Lidgerwood St., and from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Mother Joseph Room of Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, 101 W. Eighth Ave.

SCRAPS filled with adoptable cats again

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service shelter rang in the New Year with an empty cat adoption room thanks to a two-week sale.

The emptiness didn’t last long. There is once again a full house in the cat room, said director Nancy Hill, and there are plenty of cats available for anyone who might be looking for a new companion.

The shelter is at 2521 N. Flora Road. The hours are noon to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The shelter is closed on Sundays. Adoption fees are $62.70 for cats younger than 6 months and $40 for cats 6 months and older. The fees include a license, spay/neuter, vaccinations, microchip and vet visit. Feed Cheney free meal set for Jan. 30

CHENEY – Feed Cheney presents a free meal on the last Monday of the month, September to May, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Wren Pierson Community Center, 615 Fourth St.

The Jan. 30 dinner will be served by community volunteers, and guests will be able to select groceries to take home.

In conjunction with the meal, the Cheney Clothing Bank will offer extended hours at 5 p.m. before the meal.
