Preps roundup: Mead, CV set for showdown

Mead took out the only other undefeated Greater Spokane League wrestling team, University, with a victory at home on Wednesday night.

The undefeated Panthers (7-0) will face the league’s other one-loss team, Central Valley (6-1), tonight at 7 p.m. at CV. The Bears downed visiting Rogers 60-20 on Wednesday.

Mead scored a 43-18 victory over the Titans (6-1). No. 1-ranked Tyler McLean returned from an injury to win by pin at 152 pounds. Also for Mead, top-ranked Chandler Rogers pinned fourth-ranked Adrian Orndorff at 160, and Sam Davis took a 4-0 win over Alex Bieker at 120 after having lost to Bieker twice this season.

Central Valley won 10 matches, with nine pins and a forfeit, in its victory over Rogers (3-4). The Bears’ first three pins by seniors Kurt Beck (182), Colton Cole (195) and Dan Schoultz (285) put CV on the way to the victory.

Ferris (2-5) came up with a 40-28 win over visiting North Central (3-4). The Saxons’ triumph included Donavin McElliott’s pin over L.J. Lowery in the third period at 4:54 with McElliott trailing 8-7.

Mt. Spokane (5-2) went to Lewis and Clark and came away with a 43-28 victory over the Tigers (1-6). The Wildcats opened the match with three victories, including John Hoover’s pin at 145 pounds in 56 seconds.

Visiting Shadle Park (2-5) rolled over winless Gonzaga Prep (0-7) 57-18. Shadle Park had five pins and Dylan Schmitt’s 8-5 decision over Evan Matthews in a back-and-forth match at 145 pounds along with four forfeit victories. Evan Matthews of Gonzaga Prep scored a late escape to outlast Alex Van Vlyman 2-1 at 220.

Gymnastics

All-around winner Lily Hoch of Lewis and Clark scored a 9.25 on an optional bars routine and picked up firsts in the balance beam (8.7) and vault (8.45) but Central Valley, led by McKenzie Lancaster’s first in the floor exercise (8.4) and second in the all-around, edged the Tigers in the team scoring in a Greater Spokane League meet at North Central. NC was third and Rogers fourth.

The Bears were aided in their victory by Clarisa Martinez and Alexis Mariatt, who went 4-5 in the all-around, behind NC’s Courtney Wanke.
