City of Spokane: Move cars off streets

Too many cars are still parked on the streets for City of Spokane plows to do an effective job, a city spokeswoman said this morning.

“There are still too many cars being parked on arterials, residential hills routes 20 and above, and residential areas,” spokeswoman Ann Deasy said in an e-mail to media.

The city reminds drivers to move their cars to the odd side of the street until plows have passed.

Cars that are in the way could get a $30 ticket.

The city declared a stage 2 snow emergency Thursday night, which calls for all streets to be plowed, a process that is expected to take up to four days.

And I’ll remind you, city of Spokane:

If you put the word out that it’s a Stage 1 or 2 snow emergency after most people have went to bed or after they’ve went to work, they probably will not be aware of the said emergency. Thus, their cars will not be moved off of city streets…

But hey, go ahead and write $30 tickets. It’s just more O/T for the employees writing the citations, right?

[Note to brilliant minds in local government: If you’re going to declare snow emergencies, do so before the local television news wahoos do their 5 & 6pm broadcasts and when people are home from work and on the internet. Duh.]

It will take 4 days to clean up the streets? WTH? It’s been snowing for 4 days and yet the main street east of my street (and my street for that matter) has yet to be plowed, even once.

Why even bother? By tonight it will start melting…

Admit it City Hall, ya’ll can’t get er did; even with (up to now) a light winter, with days of advance notice of storms, and no matter who the freakin’ mayor is/isn’t…WTH????

Oh, and have a nice day!

Bahahaha… More whining about a fact of life here in the Inland Northwest! You all know about moving your cars when it snows… Why does the city have to remind you and when they do you get indignant and act like petulant little children?

A couple of news outlets made the mistake of telling people to move their cars to the even side of the street because it’s 2012 instead of odd because it’s the 2011 snow season.

@Loudin: Mouth - nose… what’s the difference??? Get’s the job done either way. I failed to realize I was rationalizing with someone given to grade-school insults.

No facts have escaped me… I never made any claims about plowing schedules etc… Perhaps it is you who is mistaken…

On a side note - is it Loudin here or is it just me?

What about the many people who CAN’T move their cars because of the snow depth? Beside that, and in spite of the lousy attempts to inform the public, it’s a crapshoot trying to ascertain when plows will get through.
The snow removal program in Spokane is neanderthal.
    There’s a better way.

Lots of people don’t read a newspaper, internet etc. whatever or TV station crap.. they never hear about the car moves….

I always park my hummer on the sidewalk, so when it comes to you street-parking scofflaws, I say TICKET AWAY!!!!

Finally, a city administration with some teeth! CONDON!!!!

Earlier today, I told some nonenglish speaker I’d pay him $20 to blow the snow from my yard onto the neighborhood kid’s wheelchair ramp.

When he finished, I asked to see some ID. He ran away! FREE SNOW BLOW! I might even make some money on America’s Funniest Home Videos when the kid tries to wheel down the ramp.

Ah, there’s the Scusie we all love.

Be honest, Scusie: The audience on AFHV is too dark for your tastes, right? They ought to be filming that in a Scandinavian country or at least they should keep the Mediterranean-types in the shadows. The last thing this world needs is another public depiction of Super Mario speaking Spanish while eating a chimichanga, right?

As for Condom and his teeth…well, I’ll leave that to you and your special knowledge of our short leader. BTW: Is it true he got a bunch of new suits from N. Korea recently? I know “Men’s Warehouse” doesn’t have the best selection in the world…but even they can scrounge up a pair of 26x36 slacks.

    “Please, share it with us.”

Simple. Big snowstorm with major accumulations predicted. Said big snowstorm arrives. START PLOWING. What were they waiting for, to tap the Ruby Slippers together and make it all go away?

I drove from way north to rockwood clinic on 5th, all roads looking pretty good. Just the side streets in neighborhoods not plowed, and so what. The only bad thing was the fire engine blocking me from hitting the north/south corridor, which was beautiful earlier.

    Great job with limited equipment!

  • Byrdie714 on January 20 at 6:04 p.m.

It is kind of hard to plow the streets with all the idiots driving on it.

Secondly, not everyone has a driveway or a garage to park their cars in. Where are they going to park, oh yeah—in the street.

Move it to the other side? Kind of hard when your neighbors don’t have garages and driveways making parking scarce.

Don’t like the snow? Get out of Spokane! Suck it up! It’s winter!

Get off my lawn….if I can find it, that is.

  • catfuzz on January 20 at 7:32 p.m.

“Get your cars off the street” This assumes there is actually an alternative location for people to park. At my former residence, there was no other parking besides the street. “Move your car to the even/odd side of the street” This assumes that there is actually enough space to park an entire neighborhood of cars on one side of the street. That was not the case at my former residence. I’m so glad I moved out of Spokane and have my own driveway.

WOW, where to even begin?! .. lets start with Mr Bray. IF you have a solution then present it to city council but all I here from you on a regular basis in multiple forums is a “pot-stirrer”

Then lets move on to plowing facts . Snow started in earnest at about 9am Wednesday by 11am Wednesday they were calling out additional crews to assist the regular shift with plowing and de-icing. Stage 2 or not; there were crews out doing their jobs!..and have been ever since working 12 hr days …Yes it take 4 days to plow , there are 2200 lane miles in the city of Spokane to plow ONCE THE SNOW HAD STOPPED …Wednesday it snowed for 10 hrs which meant some roads had to have attention more than once to keep up with the weather

Then lets address the comment about timing to release of information to the public. The simple fact you have posted on this site tells me you have internet access to which said information can be found in multiple ways , the city web site, the news web site , facebook and twitter to name a couple . If you’re over 30 you might think back to the day before all these when the way we knew the plows were coming was when we heard them coming down the street, yet everyone seamed to have survived to make it to the 21st century.

and lastly …cars! .. Cars are you personal private property, therefore they are your responsibility . The streets are right-aways not parking lots . Plowing is done for public safety first and convenience second , if you own a car then it is your responsibility to figure out where to park it so plowing can be done in a fashion that say a fire truck could get to your house when you give yourself a heart attack over freaking out over 6 inches of snow .

and when all else fail I-90 is right downtown might I suggest if you can’t handle it . go get on it and keep going.

Well said Shelley…I hope some of these loud mouth posters heed your advice. Spokane might end up an even nicer place to live.

  • lewis8457 on January 21 at 11:33 p.m.

soccormom i park on my front lawn too, heck i cant afford to water it might as well. that way i only have to run over the berm at high speed to get out in the street.

  • jimbock on January 25 at 8:31 p.m.

    Well said Shelley.
