U-Hi wrestlers improve to 7-1

 

Skyler Poole’s 4-1 double-overtime victory over Charles Lowery at 195 was the first of four University victories to start at North Central (3-5) and the Titans (7-1) went on to a 40-21 victory Thursday.

Jacob Clute of North Central won 6-4 in overtime over Connor Douglas at 132.

Lewis and Clark (2-6) got all of its wins via pin except for a pair of forfeits in taking a 66-9 victory over visiting Gonzaga Prep (1-7). Gavyn Parsons turned in the quickest pin of the night, winning in 53 seconds over Mason Jones at 113 pounds.

The only contested match that wasn’t decided by a pin came at 170, where Casey Hornbeck of Gonzaga Prep defeated Winston Welch 7-3.

Shadle Park (3-5) won every match between 126 and 220 in a 53-23 win over the Saxons (2-6). In a thriller, Shadle Park’s Kelly Sandall scored a late third-period escape and added a two-point takedown to win 5-4 over Jackson Bloom. In the most anticipated match of the night, Ferris’ Drew Sharkey pinned Tyler Brown at 285 in 4:27.

The showdown between undefeated Mead (7-0) and once-beaten Central Valley (6-1) was postponed. A makeup date had not been set.

• Great Northern League: Deer Park won the first five matches and cruised to a 46-17 win over host Cheney. The Stags’ opening victories included Cole Harris’ pin in 1:13 at 138 pounds and Joe Grable’s 14-3 major decision at 145.

Boys basketball

Sandpoint, trailing by six entering the fourth quarter, scored 25 points in the final period and went on to a 59-53 nonleague win over the host Priest River Spartans.

After the Bulldogs (5-10) took the lead in the fourth quarter, the Spartans (4-8) closed to within three points with 30 seconds remaining. But the Bulldogs hit free throws down the stretch to take the win.

Jackson Olin had 14 points and Tyler Howk and Adam Couch 11 apiece for the Bulldogs. Nine of Couch’s points came in the final period, including a 5-for-5 effort at the line.

Cameron Riley scored 14 points, and Dalton Sommer 13 and Cole Stelow 13 each for Priest River. Stelow added nine rebounds.

Girls basketball

Sandpoint (8-10) hit 7 of 10 from the line in overtime and took a 44-37 victory over the host Priest River Spartans (9-5) in a nonleague game.

Hailey Olin scored five of Sandpoint’s nine overtime points with a basket and three free throws and finished with 17 points. The Bulldogs were led by Maggie Kirscher, who made 9 of 12 from the line and finished with 23 points.

Priest River received 16 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots from Liz Halcro.
