Conscience is my guide

In Dolores Welch’s Jan. 10 letter to the editor (“ ‘Rent’ satisfies Satan”), we are urged to search our conscience.

Well, guess what? I have.

My conscience is telling me to stick up for a group of people that Welch, and many like her, constantly demonizes. Whether it is the average person that takes their religion a little too seriously or someone on the national stage like Rick Santorum, people seem to have an ax to grind with homosexuals.

My conscience also reminds me that it wasn’t too long ago we had a group of people in this country that were demonized for their skin color.

My conscience tells me that if two human beings love each other, then they have every right in the world to love each other, regardless of their gender.

You might say that, because I’m an atheist, I have no moral responsibility. You’re wrong. It’s my moral responsibility to stand behind the bullied, and to stand up to bullies.

I stand behind gay rights and stand up to Dolores Welch and people like her.
