New defibrillator at West Valley High School
West Valley High School has received a new automated external defibrillator through Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center’s Project ADAM, a program which helps install the AEDs in places where the community gathers in case someone suffers from sudden cardiac arrest.
Students and staff members will be trained to recognize a cardiac emergency, perform CPR and use the AED to administer a shock to the victim’s heart.
“Being prepared involves an investment of time and resources and we want to be sure we can effectively respond to any medical emergency that occurs on our property,” said district spokeswoman Sue Shields.
The school had to come up with its own emergency plan to receive the AED from Project ADAM.
“Using an on-site AED to provide quick defibrillation to an individual suffering from sudden cardiac arrest offers the best chance of survival,” said Ryan Schaefer, Project ADAM coordinator. “A school that develops and practices their emergency action plan facilitates a more effective coordinated response when a true emergency arises.”
Central Valley levy forums
Central Valley School District will host four forums in the coming weeks to discuss the district’s upcoming school programs and operations levy which voters will be asked to approve on Feb. 14.
The levy will replace one that expires in December.
Superintendent Ben Small will offer an opportunity to ask questions about the levy, which funds programs and activities that are not funded by the state.
The meetings will be held Tuesday at Central Valley High School, 821 S. Sullivan Road, Jan. 31 at Opportunity Elementary School, 1109 S. Wilbur Road, Feb. 2 at Liberty Lake Elementary School, 23606 E. Boone Ave. and Feb. 9 at University High School, 12420 E. 32nd Ave. All meetings will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Visit www.cvsd.org to view a video about the levy, or call the district office at (509) 228-5400 for more information.
Principal search forums
The Central Valley School District is conducting a search to replace Principal Daryl Hart who announced last month he will retire from University High School at the end of the school year.
The district will meet with parents and interested community members to discuss the qualities they most want from a new principal. The meeting will held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday in the school library, 12420 E. 32nd Ave.
The meeting will include a questionnaire about personal characteristics and important challenges facing the school.
A similar process is taking place with students and staff members.
The district hopes to conclude its search to replace Hart in late April.
