In brief: Man faces charges of attempted killing

Spokane police arrested a man on attempted- murder charges after responding to a domestic violence call at home in the 800 block of West York Avenue.

About 10:10 p.m. Saturday, 911 dispatchers received a call in which they could hear a man threatening to kill a woman.

“When officers arrived they could hear a female screaming inside,” Officer Dan Waters said. “As officers made entry into the house they could clearly hear the sound of a round being chambered in a firearm.”

Police found a man and a woman in an upstairs bedroom of a home. The man was armed with a gun, police said.

Corey A. Holten, 42, was arrested on charges of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree burglary and felony violation of a no-contact order.

Prowler report leads to voyeur charge

A 29-year-old Spokane man faces a voyeurism charge after he was allegedly found near the Girl Scouts of America building.

Police were called to 1404 N. Ash St. about 11:20 p.m. Saturday on a report of a prowler. The Girl Scouts were having a late-night gathering, Officer Dan Waters said. The man fled when police arrived, but a police dog found a suspect hiding under a car.

The suspect, Martin J. Green, 29, was also charged with second-degree burglary.

Driver sought in hit-and-run

Spokane police continue looking for a man wanted in a felony hit-and-run collision.

Early Sunday morning, police responded to East Everett Avenue and North Standard Street to investigate a crash in which the passenger of the victim vehicle had to be cut out of the car by firefighters, police said. The passenger and driver of the vehicle that was struck were taken to the hospital to be treated for multiple injuries, including broken bones, said Officer Dan Waters. The injuries were not believed to be life- threatening.

The hit-and-run driver was last seen talking on his cellphone as he walked from the scene, police said.

Evidence was recovered from the scene, and the investigation was continuing, Waters said.

Two men suffer gunshot wounds

Two men were shot in their lower legs near Second Avenue and Cedar Street after a fight at nearby restaurant.

The victims told police that someone inside a white van fired a gun at them, Sgt. Kevin King said.

Police found the van at Division Street and Buckeye Avenue but made no arrests, King said.

“The occupants stated that they had been in an argument with some other people at the restaurant, but denied shooting anyone,” King said. “None of the witnesses were able to identify anyone in the van, so the occupants were released after being identified. The van was seized.”

The victims were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Remains found of missing woman

The body of Jeannette M. Gagnon, missing since Jan. 18, was found in a wooded area off Simpson Parkway in Cheney on Sunday morning.

Gagnon’s relatives were notified. The cause of death will be determined by the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office, Cheney Police Department officials said, although they didn’t suspect foul play.

Browne’s Addition roads to be plowed

Spokane street crews will focus on knocking down snow berms, preventing slick roads and clearing Browne’s Addition now that the rest of the city’s streets have been plowed, officials said Sunday.

North-south streets in Browne’s Addition are scheduled for plowing Tuesday. On Wednesday, crews are expected to plow east-west streets, said Marlene Feist, city spokeswoman.

“Because streets in Browne’s Addition are very narrow, all vehicles must be moved to accommodate the plows,” Feist said. “Vehicles that aren’t moved will be towed.”

With the snow emergency lifted, Spokane’s street crews will return to regular winter operations.

Up to 3 inches of snow was forecast Sunday night, but temperatures today are expected to be slightly above freezing, according to the National Weather Service. Snow is in the forecast with little or no accumulation through Wednesday. Rain is expected Thursday.
