In brief: Seguin nets shootout goal for Bruins’ win

NHL: Tyler Seguin scored the decisive goal against Ilya Bryzgalov in a shootout and Tim Thomas and the Boston Bruins beat the Flyers 6-5 on Sunday in Philadelphia.

Patrice Bergeron, Seguin, Milan Lucic, David Krejci and Gregory Campbell scored Boston’s goals.

Scott Hartnell scored a natural hat trick in the second period and Max Talbot had two goals for Philadelphia.

• Penguins edge Capitals on Malkin’s OT goal: Evgeni Malkin pounded home a rebound 1:31 into overtime to lift the Penguins to a 4-3 victory over the Washington Capitals in Pittsburgh.

Along with his 26th goal of the season, Malkin added two assists to give him a league-leading 58 points.

James Neal scored twice and assisted on the game-winner for Pittsburgh.

Hibbert, Pacers slip past Bryant, Lakers

NBA: Roy Hibbert scored eight of his 18 points in the fourth quarter playing with a broken nose, and six of his teammates also scored in double figures to help the Indiana Pacers beat the Lakers 98-96 in Los Angeles.

Kobe Bryant scored 33 points for the Lakers, but missed what would have been a tying 3-pointer from 30 feet from the top of the key with 3.5 seconds to play and the Pacers clinched it at the free throw line.

• Bucks beat Heat for second road win of season: Brandon Jennings scored 23 points, Ersan Ilyasova added 16 off the bench and the visiting Milwaukee Bucks held Miami to 37 percent shooting on the way to beating the Heat 91-82.

It was the second straight road win for Milwaukee, which started 0-8 away from home.

Milwaukee turned 22 Miami turnovers into 22 points and the Heat tied an NBA season-low with nine assists.

Virginia Tech holds on to upset Virginia

Men’s basketball: Erick Green scored 15 points, including two free throws with 1:52 remaining to give Virginia Tech the lead, and Dorenzo Hudson had six points over the final 2:12 as the Hokies (12-7, 1-4 ACC) beat No. 15 Virginia 47-45 in Charlottesville, Va., ending the Cavaliers’ nine-game home winning streak.

Virginia (15-3, 2-2) shot 32.6 percent overall and missed 13 of 14 3-point attempts.

• Wisconsin downs No. 22 Illinois: Jordan Taylor scored 19 points and Jared Berggren added 18 to help Wisconsin (16-5, 5-3 Big Ten) to a 67-63 upset over No. 22 Illinois (15-5, 4-3) in Champaign, Ill.

Cardinals beat Hoyas behind barrage of 3s

Women’s basketball: Shoni Schimmel scored 19 points and No. 18 Louisville (16-4, 5-2 Big East) built a 10-point second-half lead then hung on for 64-61 victory over No. 19 Georgetown (15-5, 4-3) in Washington.

Becky Burke scored 13 points for Louisville, which hit a season-high 11 3-pointers in 25 attempts.

• Duke beats Maryland for 10th straight win: Haley Peters scored a career-high 21 points and No. 5 Duke (16-2, 7-0 ACC) held on for an 80-72 win over No. 8 Maryland (18-2, 5-2) in Durham, N.C., for its 10th straight win.

U.S. women advance to semis with rout

Soccer: Abby Wambach scored twice in the first half to move into third on the career goals list for women’s international soccer, and the United States beat Guatemala 13-0 in Vancouver, British Columbia, to clinch a berth in the semifinals of the CONCACAF qualifying tournament for the London Olympics.

A left-foot tap in the 12th minute and a header in the 14th gave Wambach 129 goals for the U.S. team, moving her past Germany’s Birgit Prinz (128). She trails Mia Hamm (158) and Kristine Lilly (130).

The Americans have outscored their opponents 27-0 so far in Olympic qualifying.

Sydney Leroux, earning just her second cap, tied a U.S. record with five goals.

Chan breaks scoring mark for fifth title

Miscellany: Patrick Chan broke his world scoring mark en route to winning his fifth Canadian figure skating title in Moncton, New Brunswick.

He finished with 302.14 overall points to win the event, totaling 200.81 points for a free program that included two quadruple jumps.

Chan scored 280.98 overall at the world championships last April in Moscow, and 187.96 in the free skate.

• Davis claims gold in 1,000: Shani Davis won his second gold in as many days, claiming the 1,000-meter men’s World Cup long track event at the Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns.

The American finished in 1 minute, 7.69 seconds to edge Stefan Groothuis of The Netherlands (1:07.94).

The Dutch also finished 1-2 in the women’s 1,000, with Laurine van Riessen edging teammate Marrit Leenstra.

• Kirchgasser wins women’s WC slalom: Michaela Kirchgasser of Austria won a World Cup slalom with a time of 1 minute, 47.25 seconds in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, after pre-race favorites Marlies Schild and Maria Hoefl-Riesch skied out on the first run.

World Cup leader Lindsey Vonn finished seventh with a time of 1:50.14.
