Out & About: Big evening funds SCI’s wildlife-related effort
OUTFUND – The Inland Empire Chapter of Safari Club will raise money for wildlife conservation at its annual fundraising banquet and auction on Feb. 11 at the Mirabeau Park Hotel, 1100 N. Sullivan Road in Spokane Valley.
Nonmembers are invited to the event.
Mike Rogers Jr., host for the TV big-game hunting program “Expedition Safari,” will be this year’s speaker.
The auction begins at 5:30 p.m., featuring hunting trips ranging from Spokane’s backyard to South America, Europe and Africa, among other items.
“Seventy percent of the funds raised locally stay local to support the freedom to hunt, conservation, hunter’s education and Sportsman Against Hunger, which donated over two tons of processed meat to local food banks and community kitchens last year,” said local chapter spokesman Mike Beshoar.
Two tickets to the 2012 Masters golf tournament held in Augusta, Ga., also will be auctioned.

Author to detail Ice Age floods
OUTSEE – The author of “Cataclysms on the Columbia: the Great Missoula Floods,” will present a free program Monday, 7 p.m., at the Spokane Community College LAIR.
Scott Burns, a geology professor at Portland State University, will present the topic from the most recent revision of the book he coauthored with John Allen and Marjorie Burns.
The program is sponsored by the Ice Age Floods Institute, iafi.org.
Dworshak trapping expanded
OUTCULL – The Idaho Fish and Game Commission has expanded the wolf trapping season to include Unit 10A in the Dworshak-Elk City wolf management zone starting Wednesday and running through March 31.
Clearwater region commissioner Fred Trevey said the expanded trapping would reduce wolf numbers and help local rural residents, such as in the Elk City area, who have penned livestock or other domestic livestock.
However, rural residents already have the right to shoot wolves attacking livestock.
The rest of the Dworshak-Elk City zone (units 14, 15, 16) was opened for wolf trapping in November.
Rod-building classes offered
OUTFISH – Steve Moran, a custom rod builder for 40 years, is scheduling fishing-rod-building classes for one or two people at a time at 6107 E. Trent Ave.
Students work with Moran in four 2-hour sessions to build their fishing rod.
