Salaries out of whack

I am concerned with the inflated salaries being given to the WSU football coaching staff, particularly at a time when the school is complaining about state funding cuts.

We have a governor who holds education hostage to pass a sales tax increase while WSU arranges these salaries.

Costs at our universities have continued to spiral upward with no serious attempt to hold them down. Students take on increasing debt just to finance needed classes.

Some people argue that the education and athletics functions of the schools need to be treated separately. That reasoning just minimizes the only reason why WSU exists: education.

College athletic funding was not always this grandiose. As years go by, each school ratchets up its sports contributions in order to keep up with the other schools. They instead need to keep up academically.

I find it difficult to have any sympathy for the funding plight that WSU, or any university, is complaining about when they place football over education as they have been doing with the stadium upgrade and now these salaries.

I think we need a return of fiscal sanity in this state, starting with the colleges.
