OAKLAND, Calif. — Carlos Peguero says he’s better prepared for this latest Mariners stint than he was a year ago.
In that initial call-up, which lasted just over two months, Peguero hit .196 with 54 strikeouts in 143 at-bats. He did hit six home runs, but was striking out nearly every time up when the Mariners finally sent him down.
Now, after hitting home runs in five consecutive Triple-A games, Peguero has earned another shot and says he won’t be as awed by the experience as he was his first time around.
“I’m taking it like a positive experience for me,” he said of last year’s stint. “I know the numbers weren’t good for me and that’s why I was sent down. But I’m taking it as a good learning experience, and I’ll try to be better and prepare myself to be here.
“I know what it takes to be here, and now I know the kind of adjustments and what it takes to be here.”
Peguero got a start in right field on Friday as the Mariners opened a series against the Oakland Athletics. Ichiro moved to designated hitter. Manager Eric Wedge said Peguero will mainly play the outfield while he’s with the M’s, with some DH action.
“I’d like to take a good look at him if I can,” Wedge said. “At some point in time, we’re going to have some numbers issues. You can only play so many. But right now, we should have an opportunity to play him here for a few days.”
Notes: Mariners first-round draft pick Mike Zunino, a catcher from the University of Florida, on Friday was named winner of the Golden Spikes Award, given to the top amateur baseball player in the nation.
• Mariners starter Erasmo Ramirez has a strained flexor bundle in his throwing elbow and won’t make it back into the rotation for his first turn after the All-Star break.
The Mariners will likely recall Blake Beavan from Triple-A in Ramirez’s spot. Hisashi Iwakuma, scheduled for bullpen duty this weekend, will join the rotation after the break and take the spot of demoted starter Hector Noesi.
• C Jesus Montero got the night off as he recovers from a mild concussion suffered earlier in the week. The Mariners are monitoring his progress day to day and don’t know whether he’ll play this weekend.
