Pullman blocker Logan selected

Pullman High sophomore Diana Logan has been selected as a middle blocker for the USA Volleyball Girls’ Youth Continental Team.

The 6-foot-1 Logan plays with the Palouse Area Club Volleyball team. She will join 22 other girls from across the United States when they train together July 19-23 in Des Moines, Iowa. The group will be divided into two teams to compete at the USAV High Performance Championships July 24-28.

Softball

Kendra Bruno (University) slugged a three-run home run and drove in four runs as the Spokane Dawgs defeated Perfect Storm of Lewiston 8-2 to win the 18-U White Division in the Spokane Softball Umpires Association 4th of July Shootout girls fastpitch tournament on Sunday at the Merkel Complex.

Malia Wash (North Central) scattered seven hits as the Dawgs capped a three-game winning streak after losing two one-run games in pool play to open the tournament.

Menace Northwest of West Richland won the 18-U Red Division 9-8 over Spokane Diamonds-Blue on a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the eighth after Diamonds-Blue had rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh to force extra innings in the battle of tournament unbeatens.

Pitching carried Coeur d’Alene Crush ’97 to the 16-U Red title. Mariah Montee pitched a two-hitter in an 8-0 championship-game victory over Spokane Diamonds-Black after Breana Burk came within one out of a perfect game in a 4-1 semifinal victory over Northwest Wildfire of Coeur d’Alene, finishing with a one-hitter. Both are freshmen at Coeur d’Alene High School.

The Kelowna (B.C.) Heat won 16-U White, 4-1 over Spokane Scream.

In other finals, Spokane Crash won 14-U Red 14-0 over Spokane Stealth ’98, Coeur d’Alene Crush beat Spokane Diamonds 6-5 in 14-U White, Spokane Cougars won 14-U Blue 10-5 over Spokane Stealth-Red, and Spokane Crash teams won 12-U, 11-4 over the Washington Mustangs of Chelan, and 10-U 6-3 over Coeur d’Alene Crush.

Area players selected to the first team were: Jolene Rogers, Taylor Kellum, Jammie Madonna and Tasji Urahasen of Colville and Vanessa Ahrendt and Nikki Tiffany of Lakeside.

Miranda Bittos of Lakeside was named to the second team and Cassie Cote, McKenna Cabbage and Leanna Carr of Colville were named honorable mention.

Soccer

Three Spokane Soccer Club Shadow Premier Teams won 2012 UC Club National Cup XI Northwest Regionals held June 23-26 in Redmond, Wash. The winners were SSC Shadow B95-A, SSC Shadow G96-B and SSC Shadow G00-A.

Players on SSC Shadow B95-A are: Max Axtell, Matt Beaulaurier, Derek Brock, Spencer Burr, Ricky Carroll, Nolan Eldridge, Coleton Fitzgerald, Johnathan Galgalo, Christian Haas, Chandler Howard, Tyrus LaRocca, Damian Lawson, Tony Manzo, Chase Milligan, Diego Morales, Ben Thompson and Peter Worrall. The team is coached by Matt Leonard.

Players on the SSC Shadow G96-B are: Kasey Ames, Amanda Butler, Barrett Chaparro, Jessica Ellingsen, Olivia Ellis, Cassie Fielding, Sydney Goldfeldt, McKenzie Lemer, Emma Long, Mykai McDirmid, Hailey Nypen, Megan Oliver, Jessica Scott, Erica Simpson, McKenna Stocker, Kelsi Walker and Sydney Weiler. The team is coached by Brandon Schreiner and Dennis Strasser.

The team is coached by Abbas Faridnia.

Golf

Sierra Kersten of Spokane finished 12th in the U.S. Girls’ Junior Sectional Qualifying on June 25 at Manito Golf and Country Club.

Kersten shot 81, finishing nine strokes behind the winner, Kendall Gray of Federal Way.

She was also eighth in a WJGA team qualifier in the 14-17 age division. Other area placers were Lydia Kim of Spokane, Allison Duffin of Hayden and Nicole Berg of Spokane.

John Duffin of Hayden won the 14-17 boys division and Eric Ansett of Spokane was third. Other area placers were Blake Ellingson of Spokane, Carson Fuhs of Spokane, Derek Bayley of Rathdrum, Idaho, Jake Verlin of Moscow, Tanner Comes of Spokane, Mathew Heckel of Spokane, Michael Porter of Coeur d’Alene, Stephen Roller of Hayden, Kenny Dodge of Post Falls and Zach Spencer of Mead.

• Mark Beck edged Joel Christensen, both of Liberty Lake, for first in the boys 16-18 age division at the 2nd annual Liberty Lake Classic Junior tournament at Liberty Lake and MeadowWood last weekend.

Both shot 71 on Saturday and turned in 74s on Sunday.

Pierce McDonald of the Tri-Cities won the boys 13-15 division with 77 and 83 and Max Toenjes of Sandpoint took second with a pair of 80s.

Jack Johnson of Liberty Lake won the boys 10-12 division with 83 and 88 and Will Reeves of Sandpoint was second (83-91).

In the girls, Michal Schuster of St. John won the girls 16-18 division with rounds of 79 and 83. Katie Ochoa of Spokane was second (90-91).

In the 13-15 division, Hailey Warren of Mead won with 95 and 90 while Emily Callahan of Coeur d’Alene was second (106-93).

Football

Central Valley graduate and quarterback Gaven Deyarmin threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, but the East’s rally fell short as the West prevailed 28-21 on June 30 in Everett in the annual all-star game.

Nine players from the Greater Spokane League participated in the game. The West opened a 28-0 lead before Deyarmin led the rally. He completed 18 of 29 passes for 224 yards.

Baseball

The Spokane Baseball Club fell 4-3 to Seattle Flex in the Wilkinson Tournament championship game Monday in Seattle. Seattle Flex scored the winning run on a single to right in the sixth inning. Mitch Bevacqua of Lake City led SBC with two hits.

SBC went 5-1 at the tourney, beating Seattle Flex 2-1 in pool play.
