Warren Frank “Bud” Flanik, age 83, a resident of Addy, WA passed away on July 2, 2012 at his Addy home.
Bud was born on November 2, 1928 in Colville, WA the son of George Frank and Winnifred (Mack) Flanik.
Bud’s family home- steaded on Onion Creek before moving to Swiss
Valley.
He spent several years in Swiss Valley and then moved with his family to the ranch in Marble Valley in 1936.
Bud attended grade school at the Summit Valley School and then finished his education in Chewelah, graduating in 1945 from the Jenkins High School.
On September 22, 1950, Bud entered the U.S. Army.
He was honorably discharged on September 21, 1952 as a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served with the Army Corp of Engineers.
During his time in the service, Bud married Sonja Brownfield and they began a family with the birth of their daughter, Karen.
Bud then worked in both residential and road construction on projects in Alaska and across the United States.
He returned to Northeastern Washington where he resided in Cheney, WA.
While in Cheney, Bud ranched, worked as a mechanic for Ratcliff Motors and expanded his involve- ment and love for racing by building an oval track on his property.
Returning to Addy, WA, Bud operated the Addy Garage for 20 years and then settled back onto the family farm in Marble Valley.
Bud had a great passion for nostalgic automobiles, tractors and almost anything with a motor.
He was a prominent figure in stock car racing in the Spokane area for many years.
Bud gave of himself and developed sentimental connections to those things he possessed.
This was apparent in the fact that nearly all of his cars, tractors, cattle and some friends were given nick names.
Bud had little tolerance for the “unmotivated” but was always willing to offer his trust and friendship to those he met.
His relationships were important as he would travel to many of his military reunions and carried many lifelong friendships.
Bud was a man of his work and no more than a handshake was needed in any of his dealings.
He was a member of the Hassie Club, Chokes and Spokes, Kaiser Club and a lifelong member of the NRA.
Bud was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Betty Jean.
He is survived by his daughter, Karen Rhodes and her husband, Greg, Chewelah, WA; grandsons, Dan Flanik, Kettle Falls and Dustin Rhodes, Spokane, WA; great grandchildren; Gentry, Lindsey and Lyndon Flanik, true companion of over 30 years, Lyola Grittner, Chewelah, WA and a host of extended family.
A celebration of life and potluck gather for Mr. Warren F. “Bud” Flanik, will begin at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, July 15th, 2012 at the Addy Inn.
