In brief: CdA music teacher wins house in raffle

A Coeur d’Alene music teacher won a house worth $255,000 Wednesday evening in the North Idaho College Foundation’s Really BIG Raffle.

The home, built by students in the college’s carpentry program, was the grand prize in the 19th annual fundraiser. Debbi Hahn, who teaches beginning strings to fifth graders in the Coeur d’Alene School District, won the three-bedroom, two-bath rancher on Sorbonne Drive in northwest Coeur d’Alene. The house has more than 3,600 square feet, including an unfinished basement.

There were four other major prize winners drawn Wednesday at Fort Sherman Park on the NIC campus: Richard Hardy of Dalton Gardens won a $20,000 car, Melissa Burke of Spokane Valley won a $10,000 boat, Marlene Watts of Coeur d’Alene won a $3,500 travel package, and Wayne Koski of Mullan won a $2,000 shopping spree.

The foundation sells 5,000 raffle tickets at $100 apiece.

The $220,000 in proceeds from this year’s raffle will go toward scholarships for students in need, upgrading technology equipment on campus, and capital improvements. The foundation also puts $50,000 toward a faculty and staff grant program.

The foundation has generated proceeds of $3.2 million since the raffle began.

Naked man assaults woman on walk

A naked man assaulted a woman who was walking in a residential area in Spokane Valley early Wednesday.

The man still is at large. He’s described as black with an athletic build and a tattoo on his upper right arm.

Police say the victim was taking her morning walk near East 17th Avenue and South Carnahan Road about 5:15 a.m. when the man tried to steal her watch, then threw her to the ground and dragged her down an embankment. The victim, who was injured, freed herself after a brief struggle. She said her attacker should have scratches on his chest and arms from the fight.

Police had been looking for the man since a homeowner in the 4800 block of East Gloria Lane called 911 about 2:30 a.m. and said she’d awoken to someone knocking on her back door. She waited inside with her two children while deputies searched unsuccessfully for the man. The woman’s husband came home from work about 3:45 a.m. and found the naked man standing in their front yard. Deputies still were in the area when he called 911 but could not find the man.
