Long time Creston/Lincoln resident Edith Esther Wright passed away in Davenport on July 8, 2012.
Her home was in Creston.
Edith Esther Wenzel was the third of six children born to William Edward and Emma Augusta Melvina (Kunde) Wenzel.
She was born at Dennison, Iowa on December 2, 1918.
She was two years old when her parents moved to Isabel, South Dakota.
They bought a farm about ten miles southwest of Isabel in Ziebach County.
She grew up on the farm and attended grade school at the Wilson School.
She also attended high school in Isabel.
When she was thirteen years old, she herded cattle for Fred England for one summer earning the sum of twenty-five cents a day.
She really thought she had a lot of money when she got her week’s wages.
She also had to work on the farm doing everything that she was able to do.
Later she did house work for several people in the area.
This time she got a little better wage of 3.50 a week.
In the spring of 1938, when she was 20 years old, she went to Coeur d’Alene staying with the John Spellman family until Harold and Clara (Wenzel), Hall, her older sister and their family arrived from Seattle, Washington.
She stayed with them for the next year babysitting their children.
She was living in Coeur d’Alene when she met “Tom” Wright.
He came from a large family being the ninth of eleven children.
They were married on May 8, 1939 in Coeur d’Alene.
That same night, her sister Clara and her children left by train to join her husband Harold, who was shearing sheep in Wyoming.
She found herself with no family to turn to.
Edith was very homesick for the farm and her sisters but she never returned to South Dakota to live again.
In February of 1940, she and Tom moved to Lincoln, Washington.
A new logging mill was being built and Tom got a job as a carpenter building the mill.
Later when the mill started into operation, he worked as a log scaler in the mill.
They lived in Lincoln for 35 years before moving to Creston, Washington about eight miles from Lincoln, on October 7, 1975.
They never had any children .
After Tom’s death, she lived by herself with the help of valued friends to the age of 93+ in the same home that she and Tom bought in 1975.
She had a large garden where she raised vegetables and many varieties of flowers.
She had a beautiful yard and did the maintenance herself.
Her hobbies consisted of crocheting, crafts, and needle work.
She created many beautiful things that gave beautiful memories for many people.
Tom passed away January 1, 1978 and is buried in Creston, Washington.
She is the last of the William Wenzel children.
All of her siblings preceded her in death along with her parents.
Her family consisted of Clara (Harold) Hall, Herbert (Emma) Wenzel, Dorothy (Herbert) Baker, Raymond (Jewel) Wenzel and Betty (Adam) Bosch.
She is survived by numerous nephews and nieces.
It was her request that she be buried beside her husband with graveside services only.
Interment services will be held at the Creston Cemetery on July 13, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Guy Schmielau officiating.
