Spokane’s Haase earns medalist honors at PNGA

Spokane’s Megan Haase shot a 1-under-par 70 Tuesday to capture stroke-play medalist honors at the 11th PNGA Women’s Amateur Championship at Bear Mountain Golf Resort in Victoria, British Columbia.

Haase followed up Monday’s 72 to overtake first-round co-leaders Chessey Thomas of Spokane and Kyla Inaba of Kelowna, B.C. Inaba finished runner-up at 147, one shot ahead of Thomas.

Spokane’s Sydney Kersten (156) tied for fifth. Kersten, Haase and Thomas all played at Lewis and Clark High.

Match play begins today. Haase earned a bye and could open against Pullman’s Paige Whidbee, who tied for 16th.

• Rathdrum’s Derek Bayley qualified for match play at the 66th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Stratham, N.H., with a 3-over-par 75 in the second and final round of stroke play.

Bayley, at 149, tied for 28th in a field that sends the top 64 to match play. Spokane’s Eric Ansett (171), a Ferris product, didn’t make the cut.
