Spokane golfers sweep at PNGA women’s match play

Spokane’s Megan Haase, Chessey Thomas and Sydney Kersten all won in the round of 16 on Wednesday during match play of the 111th Pacific Northwest Women’s Amateur Championship at Victoria, British Columbia.

Haase, the top-seeded stroke-play champion, defeated Pullman’s Paige Whidbee 6 and 5. Third-seeded Thomas topped Seattle’s Lori Pearson 3 and 2. Fifth-seeded Kersten stopped Lauren Atkinson of Bow, Wash., 2 up.

All three Spokane golfers had opening-round byes. Whidbee beat Kassidy Long-Goheen of Phoenix 2 and 1 to start the day.

• Derek Bayley of Rathdrum, Idaho, lost to Joo-Young Lee of Hilliard, Ohio, 3 and 2 during the first round of match play at the 65th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at The Golf Club of New England at Stratham, N.H.
