Indians blanked in Vancouver

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – The Spokane Indians outhit the Vancouver Canadians but still came out on the losing end of a 4-0 Northwest League baseball decision on Friday afternoon. Indians starter Abel De Los Santos threw five shutout innings, giving up just one hit and two walks while striking out two in lowering his ERA 2.29. But Joseph Burns (0-1) took over in the sixth and was tagged with three runs and the loss. Burns gave up a walk, single and RBI double to the first three batters he faced. One out later he gave up another RBI double. He got one more out before giving up another walk that led to him giving way to Jon Edwards. Edwards walked a batter to load the bases but then got an inning-ending ground out. Edwards pitched one more inning before Carlos Melo came in for the eighth. Melo gave up an unearned run on a double and a two-out throwing error by shortstop Cam Schiller. The Indians finished with eight hits to the Canadians’ five, but they were all singles. The Indians left two runners on base in four different innings. Spokane’s best chance to score came in the fifth. Joe Maloney led off with a single against Kyle Anderson (2-0), who had just taken over for starter Taylor Cole. Smerling Lantigua followed with another hit but Christopher Garia’s bunt resulted in a force out at third. A fly out and ground out ended the inning. Maloney and Barrett Serrato had two hits each for Spokane.
