Canadians rally past Indians
Five-run eighth spoils fine start by Edwards
VANCOUVER, B.C. – For seven innings, the Spokane Indians were in control, but a disastrous eighth saw the Vancouver Canadians rally for a 5-2 victory in Northwest League baseball action on Sunday.
Royce Bolinger singled home Hirotoshi Onaka in the top of the first inning to stake the Indians (12-25) to a 1-0 lead.
Spokane stretched it to 2-0 in the third when Cam Schiller doubled and later scored on a Vancouver (21-15) error.
Indians starter C.J. Edwards was nearly unhittable in his five innings of work. The right-hander allowed just one hit while striking out nine without a walk.
Alec Asher took over for Edwards in the sixth and pitched two shutout innings. He allowed one hit and fanned two.
But the wheels came off when Josh McElwee took the mound for Spokane in the eighth.
McElwee walked the first batter he faced before inducing a flyball out. He then allowed a single and another walk to load the bases. Jorge Flores ripped a two-run single to knot the score and McElwee was pulled in favor of Carlos Melo after issuing another walk to reload the bases.
Balbino Fuenmayor greeted Melo with a two-run double to put the Canadians up 4-2.
Melo walked the next batter before striking out Carlos Ramirez for the second out. Kellen Sweeney followed with a run-scoring single for the final run of the inning and the game.
