Break-ins not treated equally

I am happy for former National Football League player Stefan Humphries at the prospect of getting his stolen items returned. He praises the work of the Spokane Police Department, their having done a “phenomenal job of investigating the case” and “the due diligence they’ve shown has been really impressive.”

Let me point out here that we live in Spokane County, not the city. We had a home break-in in May 2011 and were lucky to have gotten a police report taken. There was no other investigational effort. A few months later, another home within a few miles was burglarized and reported in The Spokesman-Review, possibly due to the fact that the homeowners estimated their loss was $10,000 (ours wasn’t that high but we did have some jewelry of sentimental value taken).

I realize that our police departments are understaffed and under-budgeted, due to no fault of their own. I can only hope that all local law enforcement agencies treat home invasions the same, not based on any aspect of the homeowner’s status.
