The Mission Community Outreach Center, 1906 E. Mission Ave., is helping students in need get ready for the school year with its Back to School Shoe Drive.

New shoes for children in kindergarten through 12th grade will be collected through Aug. 5. The center’s goal is to collect 400 pairs of shoes.

Donations are welcome at the center, Monday through Thursday, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. or at Progressions Credit Union, 2919 E. Mission Ave. or 1212 W. Francis Ave. Cash donations also are welcome.

St. George’s plans Story Trail

St. George’s School will host a family-friendly Story Trail on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the school’s campus. The event will include hiking, hands-on science experiments and, of course, a story.

The featured story will be “River Beds: Sleeping in the World’s Rivers” by Gail Langer Karwoski. As families hike the ¼-mile trail through the woods above the campus, they’ll be able to visit stands holding laminated pages from the book. The free event supports physical fitness and literacy skills for elementary-age students.

St. George’s trailhead is located just inside the school gates on the left. The school is at 2929 W. Waikiki Road, along the Little Spokane River.
