Golf: Gary Hallberg of the United States made eight birdies in a 7-under 63 Friday in Turnberry, Scotland, during the windy second round of the Senior British Open, taking a three-stroke lead on Bernhard Langer and Tom Lehman.

Langer had a 73 after his opening 64, logging a triple-bogey 7 on the 13th hole.

Like Langer, Lehman played when the wind was at its strongest, with gusts up to 25 mph. He managed one birdie at the 17th and dropped shots on the 11th and 14th to finish with a 71.

Hallberg dropped his only shot at the second hole, then mastered the conditions with eight birdies. He got three on the run from the fifth to go out in 33. He had another run at 10, 11, 13, 14 and the 17th for a 30.

Fred Couples shot a 68, one of only two under-par rounds. He had birdies at the fifth and seventh, dropped a stroke at the 15th, birdied 16 and 17 before dropping another stroke at the last hole.

Former Pullman resident Kirk Triplett shot a 74 for a total of 143.

• McGirt, Piercy top Canadian Open leaderboard: After two rounds in the Canadian Open in Ancaster, Ontario, Scott Piercy has a share of the lead with William McGirt at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club.

McGirt had a 67 in the second round on the classic Harry S. Colt-designed course.

Robert Garrigus was two strokes back after a 66, and Bo Van Pelt was 9 under after a 66. Tim Clark, Vijay Singh and Josh Teater were 8 under. Clark had a 62, Singh shot 67, and Teater 65.

British Open champion Ernie Els missed the cut with rounds of 72 and 70.

• Lewis of U.S. holds 1-shot lead at Evian Masters: Stacy Lewis of the United States shot a 3-under 69 to keep the lead after the second round of the Evian Masters in Evian-Les-Bains, France, one stroke ahead of South Korea’s Ilhee Lee.

Lewis finished at 12 under, a day after shooting 63 in an opening round that included nine birdies.

Lewis seemed to pick up where she left off with a birdie on No. 4 and an eagle on No. 7. But she had bogeys on the 12th and 14th holes.

Lee had four straight birdies on the back nine to finish with a 67.

American Paula Creamer (67), the 2005 Evian champion, and former U.S. Women’s Open champion Inbee Park (64) were three shots behind Lewis.

Columbus acquires forward Higuain

Soccer: The Crew acquired forward Federico Higuain from Argentina’s Primera Division.

Higuain, who played for Club Atletico Colon, is the third designated player in Columbus history. The 27-year-old forward joins the Crew after scoring 10 goals across his last 62 appearances in the Primera.

Higuain, a native of Capital Federal, Argentina, began his career with River Plate in 2003.

Columbus is 7-7-4 this season, good for sixth place in the MLS Eastern Conference.

• FA charges Terry over alleged race abuse: Chelsea captain John Terry was charged by the English Football Association with racially abusing an opponent, two weeks after he was cleared by a court of the same offense.

The FA said it considered the evidence from the trial before charging Terry with directing abuse at Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League match last October.

The FA alleged Terry “used abusive and-or insulting words and/or behavior … (and) included a reference to the ethnic origin and-or color and/or race of Anton Ferdinand.”

• FIFA prosecutor Garcia: ‘No limit’ on caseload: FIFA’s new prosecutor, Michael Garcia, says there are “no limitations” on the scope of corruption allegations he can investigate, and he wants soccer fans to suggest cases.

The American lawyer promises “if there is conduct in the past that warrants investigation, I will do it.”

He has been urged by FIFA’s anti-corruption advisers to probe how 2018 and 2022 World Cup hosting rights were awarded. European politicians want him to examine Sepp Blatter’s presidential election last year.

• Nasri banned for three matches: The French Football Federation says it has banned midfielder Samir Nasri for three matches because of his behavior toward a journalist at the European Championship.

Nasri issued an expletive-laced rant following France’s 2-0 defeat to Spain in the quarterfinals. He previously made a sarcastic gesture with his finger over his mouth and yelled “Shut your mouth!” at another journalist after scoring in the opening Group D match against England.

• Barca, Mascherano agree to extension: Barcelona and Javier Mascherano have agreed to a contract extension that will keep the former Argentina captain at the club until 2016.

Barcelona says the deal will be signed in the coming weeks, with the buyout clause to be set at $123 million.

Bonds granted two weeks in appeal

Miscellany: Barry Bonds has been granted a two-week delay in his appeal of his obstruction of justice conviction.

A day after Bonds’ lawyers made the request, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals postponed the deadline for his reply brief from Aug. 2 to Aug. 16.

A jury found Bonds guilty in April 2011 of one count of obstruction of justice, finding he gave an evasive answer in 2003 to a grand jury investigating illegal steroids distribution. The trial jury deadlocked on three counts of making false statements, charges which then were dropped.

Major League Baseball’s career home run leader was sentenced in December to 30 days of house arrest, two years of probation and a $4,000 fine.

His initial brief was due March 21 and the government’s response on April 20, but both sides obtained extensions.

• Ram advances to Farmers Classic semifinals: American tennis player Rajeev Ram advanced to his second ATP Tour semifinal in three weeks, beating third-seeded Leonardo Mayer of Argentina 7-6 (3), 6-3 in the Farmers Classic.

Ram will face second-seeded Sam Querrey after fifth-seeded Xavier Malisse retired in the second set.

Querrey won in 2009 and 2010, then missed the event last year because of a right shoulder injury.

In the other semifinal, sixth-seeded Marinko Matosevic of Australia will play Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis. Berankis beat fourth-seeded Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 6-4, and Matosevic topped 34-year-old Michael Russell 6-2, 6-3.
