In brief: Orchard Center hosts health fair on June 9

SPOKANE VALLEY – Molina Healthcare and Orchard Center Elementary School will hold a Family Health and Safety Fair at 10 a.m. June 9 at the school, 7519 E. Buckeye Ave.

The event will include dental, glucose, blood pressure, cholesterol, body mass index and bone density screenings and workshops. Mammograms will also be available by appointment. To make an appointment, call (509) 474-2400.

Course offers adults introduction to fishing

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and volunteers from the Inland Northwest Wildlife Council will have Fishing 101 for local nonfishing adults. The class is being held in conjunction with Free Fishing Weekend, June 9-10. Licenses are not required during Free Fishing Weekend.

The course will begin Thursday at the Inland Northwest Wildlife Council’s Office, 6116 N. Market St., to learn the basics about fishing equipment and methods, from 6 to 9 p.m. On June 9, from 8 a.m. to noon, participants will use their new equipment and fishing skills at Bunkers Resort on Williams Lake. The class will teach where and when to go fishing, for what kinds of fish and how to clean and cook a catch.

Cost is $10 per person, to cover costs of fishing rods and reels and other course equipment. Registration is open until Wednesday or until spaces are filled. The class is open to people age 16 and older.

‘Dueling Pianos’ will benefit rehab center

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Valley Bible Church, 3021 S. Sullivan Road, will host An Evening of Dueling Pianos with Jeff and Rhiannon on June 15, to benefit the Good Samaritan Society Spokane Valley Rehab Therapy Courtyard.

Social hour begins at 6 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres and a silent and live auction and the performance will begin at 8. Dress for the evening is black and white, semi-formal.

Tickets are $50 per person. A table of six is $275 and a table of 8 is $350.

Physician to discuss health care in U.S.

WEST HILLS – Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane, 4340 W. Fort George Wright Drive, will feature Daniel Schaffer, a retired Group Health Urgent Care physician, to discuss improving health care in the United States, June 10 at 12:30 p.m.

Schaffer received his medical degree from State University of New York at Buffalo. He interned at Rose Medical Center in Denver where he also worked in outpatient and emergency room positions. Schaffer later moved to Wyoming to serve as director of emergency services. He has been a doctor at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in emergency services and in 1981 he and other area physicians formed the Spokane Minor Emergency Center, which became First Care Medical Centers.

The community discussion is open to all ages.
