Spokane Shine lose women’s soccer opener

The host Eugene (Ore.) Metro beat the Spokane Shine 2-0 on Friday in a Women’s Premier Soccer League opener for Spokane.

Tawny Ato buried a strike from 25 yards out in the 38th minute for the first goal. The Metro scored again at 79 minutes after a missed clearance left the ball in the Shine penalty box for Kristen Jaborek, who put in the goal.

Golf

The University of Washington men’s team had its season end with a 5-0 loss to Texas in the quarterfinals of match play at the NCAA championships on at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

The Longhorns won three matches and were leading in the other two when Texas clinched the victory.

Chris Williams of Moscow, Idaho, was down 2 and 1 to Julio Vegas on the 18th hole when word came that Texas had won the match. Texas will play Oregon and Cal will face Alabama in today’s semifinals.
