• Coeur d’Alene Mines Corporation was recognized by the International Society of Mine Safety Professionals with five national and international worker safety awards for operations in Nevada, Mexico, Chile and Argentina.

• The Washington Department of Corrections recognized four Eastern Washington employees at the annual awards for the Community Corrections Division: Jayme Brien, Spokane Valley office, support staff of the year; Travis Hurst, Colville field office, community corrections officer of the year; Dan Darrell, Spokane Maple Street office, volunteer of the year; Jason Lerch, Spokane Maple Street office, excellence in safety award.

• BNSF Railway honored eight Spokane-area employees for their contributions to the Uninterrupted Fuel Supply during River Maintenance project: Vic Ahlf, mechanical foreman; Kent Bealer, trainmaster; Terry Gay, superintendent operations; Patrick Gray, trainmaster; Rhonda Miller, trainmaster; William Olsen; trainmaster; Sabin Reynolds, manager; Brad Williams, terminal manager. BNSF ships diesel fuel from Portland to Pasco via Columbia River barge. When river locks were closed for maintenance for four months in 2010, the team maintained a continuous fuel supply. BNSF also honored signal manager Jeffrey Jarman with a safety leadership award.

• The Spokane County Bar Association gave its 2012 Liberty Bell Award to Steve South, the Spokane County Superior Court ex parte clerk. The award is presented to a non-lawyer who promotes understanding of and respect for law and the courts, encourages and exemplifies a sense of civic responsibility, contributes to the betterment of the community, and embodies the theme of Law Day.

• The Northeast Washington Association of School Administrators recognized Terry Knapton and Fritz Fox of the Cusick School District for outstanding community leadership and service to education and young people. Knapton is director of mentoring and training for the Kalispel Tribe of Indians and oversees the Kalispel Career Training Center. Fox is the lead instructor for the training center.

• Avista was given a Tree Line USA Award from the Arbor Day Foundation for tree care around power lines and customer and community outreach programs that contribute to a healthy urban tree canopy.

• The Lincoln Center, a Spokane event center, and local restaurants Churchill’s Steakhouse, Masselow’s and Spencer’s Steakhouse were recognized by the Washington Wine Commission for its support of Washington wines and high professional standards in wine service.
