Rose, Kardos win state rodeo championships

Led by a pair of state champions, a number of area cowboys and cowgirls qualified for the National High School Rodeo Association Finals in Rock Springs, Wyo., next month.

Peyton Rose of Deer Park captured the barrel racing title and Jesse Kardos of Newport was the top bull rider at the state finals in Ellensburg last weekend.

 The top four in each event qualified to attend the NHSRA finals.

  Janey Reeves of Clarkston was the all-around cowgirl.

 Reeves was third in barrel racing and state champion in goat tying.

  Mattie Jo Johnson and Shaina Johnson of Rosalia were second and third, respectively, in goat tying, with Wilbur’s Lauren Leyva finishing fourth.

  Thor Hoefer of Priest River (northern Idaho can compete in the Washington association) was second in bull riding. Jacob Paul of Post Falls was third in tie-down roping, with Luke Weber of Colton fourth.

 Weber and Tyler Gallaway of Spokane ended up third in team roping.

  Jaber Young of Kettle Falls finished third in bareback riding.

  • Four athletes from the area have qualified for the National Junior High Finals Rodeo in Gallup, N.M., June 24-30 by compiling points in 10 rodeos last fall and this spring, capped by the state finals last weekend in Ellensburg.

Chance Gleave, an eighth-grader at Cheney Middle School, qualified in team roping. An all-around athlete, Gleave also has a 3.8 grade-point average.

Tommi Sue Swannack, a seventh-grader at Lamont Middle School who has been competing since she was 5 years old, will compete in goat tying, breakaway roping, ribbon roping and target shooting. At the state finals, she won the average and buckles in goat tying and ribbon roping, and placed third in breakaway roping. For the year, she won state championships in goat tying and target shooting, was second in breakaway roping and third in ribbon roping. She was also selected to win the Cinch Academic Award.

Also qualifying were Callie Ray Marker of Colfax in breakaway and Jacey Johnson of Rosalia in goat tying and barrel racing.

College scene

Schuyler “Skye” Pearman-Gillman, a 2008 graduate of University High School, was a member of the Washington women’s crew that finished sixth in the NCAA Division I varsity 8+ championships on Lake Mercer in New Jersey last weekend after finishing second in its heat.

The Huskies women were seventh overall in points.

In the Pac-12 Championships, the Washington varsity 8+ boat in which Pearman-Gillman rowed finished second, its highest conference finish since 2005.

The last two summers, Pearman-Gillman rowed for her Huskies coach, Bob Earnst, in pairs for the U.S. Rowing Team, winning the Club Nationals championship in intermediate women’s pairs in 2011 after capturing titles in women’s senior and intermediate pairs in 2010.

• Hannah Kiser , a sophomore distance runner at Idaho, was selected to the Capital One Academic All-District 7 first team for the first time with a 4.0 grade-point average with a double major in molecular biology and biochemistry and is eligible for the Capital One Academic All-America team.

• Gonzaga spring-sport student-athletes compiled a cumulative 3.31 GPA with 62 students making the President’s List and 57 the Dean’s List. Six teams compiled GPAs of 3.5 or higher, with women’s soccer and women’s tennis leading the way at 3.57 each.

High school scene

The Greater Spokane League, in conjunction with the National Electrical Contractors Association and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, announced the 12th annual spring sports season award winners.

The GSL, NECA and IBEW annually honor high school students who demonstrate superior balance in academics, athletics and community involvement.

Letters of intent

North Idaho volleyball: Katie Schueman, a 6-foot-1 middle hitter from Cheney, second-team All-Great Northern League, voted most valuable offensive player by her teammates, played on the Splash Volleyball Club’s U-18 national-qualifying team and has a 3.5 GPA; Shea Fahenstock, a 5-10 setter from Eagle, Idaho, who led her state-qualifying high school team in kills, digs and assists.

Soccer

Washington East Soccer Club of Spokane, a first-year team of boys 14 and younger, qualified for the U.S. President’s Cup regional tournament in Denver June 13-17 by finishing second in its division at the Washington State Challenge Cup.
