Obituary: Wachsmuth, Gilbert

WACHSMUTH,
Gilbert

Gilbert “Gib” Hugo Wachsmuth, age 82, lifetime resident of Coeur d’Alene, passed away on May 26, 2012.

He was born on Feb. 16, 1930, and was the youngest of the three children of Hugo and Josephine Wachsmuth.
From an early age, Gib was a dedicated worker.

At age 12, he cashed his first $100 bill, after setting up pins at a local bowling alley.

He also worked at the PX at the Farragut Naval Base.

At age 16 (with papers saying he was 18) he began what would become a 48 year career with Kaiser Trentwood.

Upon his retirement, Gib was Kaiser Aluminum’s longest employed union worker.
Gib was a lifelong member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Coeur d’Alene.

He was baptized, confirmed and it was at Mass that he met his future wife, Marilynne Underwood.

The two were married there on August 19, 1950.

Also in 1950, Gib was drafted to the U.S. Army.

He was assigned to the National Guard and remained stateside during the Korean War.
He enjoyed cars, water sports, Sanders Beach, snow skiing and traveling.

Gib was a loyal and committed man, which was evident by the 48 years he spent working at Kaiser, the 61 years of marriage shared with Marilynne, and his membership at St. Thomas for all those years.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marilynne; their 3 children: Joe, Julie, and Jill; 7 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in Gib’s name to Holy Family Catholic School at 3005 W. Kathleen Ave., Coeur d’Alene, ID 83815, or to St. Vincent de Paul at 201 E. Harrison, Coeur d’Alene, ID 83814.
At this time no services will be held.

English Funeral Chapel of Coeur d’Alene has been entrusted to handle final arrangements.
