Baseball: Gonzaga University sophomore pitcher/first baseman Marco Gonzales (pictured above) is one of five players named to the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award list.

Joining Gonzales are Brian Johnson, Florida; Michael Lorenzen, Cal State Fullerton; Kevin McKague, Army; and Stephen Piscotty, Stanford.

The left-hander from Fort Collins, Colo., posted an 8-2 record and a 1.55 ERA in 12 starts this year. Gonzales hit .325 with 29 RBIs, 10 doubles and a pair of home runs.

Mead earns fifth straight

Preps: For a fifth straight year, Mead captured the WIAA/Washington Army National Guard Scholastic Cup for 4A high schools.

The award determines the top school in each of six classifications. The cup recognizes excellence in academics, sportsmanship and athletic performances.

Mead won a state championship in gymnastics and finished runner-up in boys golf, boys track and wrestling. The school also claimed academic state titles in band and drama. Mead finished 200 points ahead of runner-up Newport (Bellevue).

Boston lands skating event

Skating: The 2014 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, which serve as the Olympic trials, will be held in Boston.

U.S. Figure Skating said that nationals will run from Jan. 5-12. The Olympics begin Feb. 7 in Sochi, Russia.

Next year’s championships are in Omaha, Neb. Spokane hosted the national event in 2007 and 2010.
