Shine tie Issaquah in home opener

The Spokane Shine finished in a 1-1 draw in their Women’s Premier Soccer League home opener against Issaquah FC on Friday night at Albi Stadium.

The Shine scored first in the 13th minute after putting persistent pressure on the visitors. Averi Hallman drove a hard cross on the ground into the box from the right wing. Julissa Rodriguez dummied the pass, sucking in the defense, and let the ball roll to Tseng Shu-O, who took one touch and then fired the ball into the net from 15 yards out.

Issaquah tied the match after a defensive lapse by Spokane that allowed Joanna Hemplin to send a pass to Arica Slawson, who got the equalizing goal at 26 minutes.

Spokane dominated the final 20 minutes of the match with a half-dozen chances but could not convert. Shine goaltender Stephanie Busch had four saves while her teammates outshot Issaquah 25-12.

Issaquah leads the Northwest Division with a 2-0-1 record while the Shine are 1-1-1. The Shine play at Issaquah on Friday.
