Obituary: Sawyer, Robert H.
Age 84
SAWYER,
Robert H.
Robert (“Bob”) H. Sawyer passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2012, after a gallant battle with cancer.
Bob was born in Butte, Montana, on January 14, 1928.
He traveled regularly with his family in support of his grandfather’s mining business.
It was Walla Walla that Bob called home, as he attended high school and Whitman College, a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity and graduating in 1949 with a BA in Economics and Business.
It was at Whitman that Bob met his wife of 63 years, Gloria Woodhall.
Bob and Gloria were married June 12, 1949.
Bob pursued a successful sales career in the gas and oil industry working for Standard Oil, Signal Oil, and finally Exxon Oil Company.
His outstanding career meant many relocations and Bob and Gloria found themselves at home in many different places on the West Coast, meanwhile raising two daughters along the way.
Bob is survived by his wife, Gloria; his daughters, Victoria Shaylor (Portland) and Catherine Sawyer (Kirkland); his brother, Ronald Sawyer (Spokane Valley); two grandchildren, Mariah Shaylor and Matthew Shaylor (Marissa); and three great-grandchildren, Mazie Erdahl, Makenzie Erdahl, and Maxson Shaylor; and several nieces and nephews.
Bob is predeceased by his parents, Mildred Ahern Sawyer and Richard H. Sawyer, and his brother, Richard M. Sawyer.
Bob was known for his outstanding geniality and sense of humor.
Fondly referred to as “a class act,” Bob also had an intense inherent characteristic of “doing the right thing.”
He was an avid golfer and bridge player, loved watching Western movies and traveling with Gloria and friends.
Bob volunteered for Spokane Habitat for Humanity and served as a volunteer Financial Auditor for the Spokane County Superior Court Guardian Monitoring Program.
He was a member of the Spokane Valley Arts Council.
Gloria and her family would like to thank Hospice of Spokane for their invaluable care and support during Bob’s battle with cancer.
No service is planned.
In Bob’s memory, donations may be sent to the nonprofit Hospice of Spokane (P. O.
Box 2215 Spokane, WA 99210).
