In brief: Myamar’s Suu Kyi arrives in Europe

GENEVA – Myanmar’s Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi has arrived in Geneva on her first visit to Europe in 24 years.

The democracy activist, who spent years under house arrest for opposing the military junta in her native country, smiled and waved as she stepped out of the plane that landed in the Swiss city at 11:14 p.m. Wednesday.

She was taken by limousine to a hotel where she will spend the night before visiting the U.N.’s European headquarters today to deliver a speech at the International Labor Organization’s annual assembly.

Mexico crash kills 11 on school field trip

MORELIA, Mexico – Mexican officials say a bus on a school field trip has crashed in the western state of Michoacan, killing 11 people, including two children.

State prosecutor’s office spokesman Jonathan Arredondo says another 34 people were injured Wednesday when the bus crashed into a house and then split in half. He says the brakes may have failed.

Arredondo said two children, a brother and sister, were killed.

Arredondo says the bus was traveling to an exotic animal farm with kindergarten students, parents and teachers aboard when the accident occurred in the small town of San Marcos.

Police confirm body parts match

TORONTO – Police say DNA results confirm that the body parts mailed to two Vancouver schools last week belong to the Chinese student who was killed and dismembered in Montreal.

Montreal police Cmdr. Ian Lafreniere said Wednesday all the body parts match. A foot and a hand were also mailed to two of Canada’s top political parties in Ottawa.

Police suspect Luka Magnotta of killing Jun Lin. Magnotta was caught in Berlin last week and is facing extradition.

One of Lin’s feet and a hand were mailed to two schools last week.
