Obituary: Brown, Richard Thomson

BROWN,
Richard T.

Richard Thomson Brown, 89 years old.

Resident of Seaside, OR, died on June 6th, 2012 in Seaside, the result of a traffic accident.

Richard was born on March 26th, 1923 in West Orange, NJ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Helen Brown, his brother, William Brown, his daughter, Cynthia Brown, and his wife, Charlotte Brown.

Richard’s heritage stemmed from a long line of Browns dating back to 1635 in the Northeast and in Scotland prior to this.
Richard grew up in the Northeast, spending time in Massachusetts (Annisquam, Cape Anne, Boston), Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

He attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute until July 1942 when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a private.

He was quickly promoted into flight school and ended up as a Navigator / Bombardier.

He served missions as part of the 22nd Bomb Squadron in the China-Burma-India Theater where he won the Presidential Unit Citation and the Air Medal among other distinctions.

After WWII, Richard joined the Weather Service branch of the Air Force and helped pioneer early warning systems for violent storms.

After a 22-year history of distinguished service in the Air Force, and ending as a Lt.

Colonel, Richard retired in 1964 and started his second life as a stock and commodities broker for various firms, starting with Walston & Co. in Eugene, OR.

Richard retired from his career in the Financial Services industry in 1985 while living in Spokane, WA.

In 2010, after the death of his wife Charlotte (in 2007), Richard moved to Seaside, OR to be closer to his family.

He resided at Neawanna By the Sea, a retirement community where he quickly established many close friends, but none were closer than his new love Maxine.

Richard was continually active and enjoyed politics, computer science and taking walks as often as the weather would permit.

Richard wanted to be known as kind, gentle and honest.

This he was, but those who knew him would add that he had a tremendous sense of humor.

Richard is survived by his three children: Stephen (wife Ronna, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren), Alan and Dianne (two grandchildren).
