In brief: FSU ends Stony Brook’s storybook run
College baseball: Florida State capitalized on a throwing error to score six runs in the third inning, and the Seminoles ended Stony Brook’s surprise appearance in the College World Series with a 12-2 victory in Omaha, Neb., on Sunday.
Justin Gonzalez and Devon Travis homered to help the Seminoles build an early 9-0 lead against the CWS first-timers from Long Island.
FSU (49-16) rebounded from a 4-3, 12-inning loss to Arizona on Friday and scored at least 12 runs for the third time in four games.
Stony Brook (52-15) stunned the college baseball world by upsetting six-time national champion LSU in a three-game super regional to reach the CWS. But the Seawolves were beaten 9-1 by UCLA on Friday and outscored 21-3 in their two games in Omaha.
• Arizona moves within one win of CWS final: Konner Wade pitched a five-hit shutout, Arizona did its scoring on five straight fourth-inning hits, and the Wildcats (45-17) beat Pac-12 rival UCLA 4-0 in the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
The win puts the Wildcats one victory away from the best-of-3 finals.
UCLA (48-15) plays Florida State in an elimination game on Tuesday.
Germany moves past Denmark at Euro 2012
Soccer: Germany advanced to a quarterfinal against Greece after beating Denmark 2-1 in their last Group B match at the European Championship in Lviv, Ukraine.
The Danes were eliminated.
Lukas Podolski opened the scoring for Germany in the 19th minute and Lars Bender slotted home the winner in the 80th after Michael Krohn-Dehli had equalized for Denmark in the first half.
• Ronaldo strikes twice in Portugal win: Cristiano Ronaldo finally found the form he was lacking at the European Championship, scoring twice to give Portugal a 2-1 win over the Netherlands in Kharkiv, Ukraine, and a spot in the quarterfinals.
Rafael van der Vaart gave the Dutch the lead in the 11th minute, but Portugal then took control of the match.
• Galaxy top Timbers to snap skid: Todd Dunivant scored the lone goal to help the Los Angeles Galaxy snap a seven-game winless streak with a 1-0 victory over the Portland Timbers in Carson, Calif.
• Fire use late goals to down Red Bulls: Gonzalo Segares and Chris Rolfe scored in the second half to lead the Chicago Fire to a 3-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls in Bridgeview, Ill.
Charles leads Sun over Dream
WNBA: Tina Charles scored 23 points, pulled down a season-high 22 rebounds and hit a pair of free throws with 3.1 seconds left to give the Connecticut Sun their first lead of the game in a 75-73 victory over the Dream in Atlanta.
Armintie Price scored a season-high 20 points and Sancho Lyttle had 15 for the Dream.
• Shock find first win of season: Rookie Riquna Williams scored 15 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter to lead Tulsa to an 87-75 victory against the Phoenix Mercury in Tulsa, Okla., giving the Shock (1-9) their first win of the season.
Wild card Haas upsets Federer
Tennis: Wild card Tommy Haas of Germany defeated Roger Federer 7-6 (5), 6-4 in Halle, Germany, to win the Gerry Weber Open.
The 87th-ranked Haas, the oldest player in the singles draw at 34, recovered from losing his serve in the first game by winning the first set on a tiebreaker and then getting the decisive break in the ninth game of the second set.
• Oudin, Jankovic to meet in Aegon Classic final: American Melanie Oudin will play former top-ranked player Jelena Jankovic of Serbia in the rain-delayed Aegon Classic final after both players won quarterfinal and semifinal matches in Birmingham, England.
Jankovic beat Misaki Doi of Japan 6-3, 6-4 in a quarterfinal that took three days to finish because of rain. She then rallied to beat China’s Zheng Jie 6-7 (2), 7-5, 6-1.
Oudin beat American Irina Falconi 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 and then downed eighth-seeded Ekaterina Makarova of Russia 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
In addition, Oudin received a wild card into Wimbledon. Wimbledon officials also announced that Grega Zemlja of Slovenia had received the final men’s wild-card spot in the tournament. On the women’s side, Ashleigh Barty of Australia was also added.
• Cornet wins Gastein Ladies title: Alize Cornet of France defeated Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium 7-5, 7-6 (1) to win the Gastein Ladies in Bad Gastein, Austria, for her first title in four years.
Officials deny Greek ticket claims
Miscellany: Organizers of the London Olympics have denied claims that the head of the Greek Olympic Committee had persuaded London officials to allocate extra premium tickets to the country by spurious means.
The denial comes as the International Olympic Committee is investigating related claims that Olympic officials and agents were selling tickets on the black market.
The paper alleged that Spyros Capralos, the Greek Olympic Committee president, asked London organizing chairman Sebastian Coe for the extra tickets on the pretext that demand in Greece outstripped expectations.
