Education Notebook: Fair offers goods benefiting Ferris bands

North Wall Schools teacher Christine Chavez and her daughter, Nashayla Turntine, a second-grader, take part in the private school’s end-of-the-year Fiesta Celebration.

The members of the Ferris High School bands and their families will have a community fair on Saturday in the parking lot of Educational Service District 101, 4202 S. Regal St., from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Shoppers will have an opportunity to help support the bands while picking up items at a bargain. Items for sale include furniture, small appliances, sporting goods, room décor, clothes and craft supplies. Hot coffee will be provided by Forza Coffee Co. and snacks will be provided by Classic Cruisin’ Cuisine roving eatery.

Band groups participating in the sale are the Wind Ensemble, the Concert Band, the Symphonic Band, the Jazz Orchestra, the Jazz Band, the Advanced Percussion Ensemble, the Intermediate Percussion Ensemble, the Drum Line, the Marching Band and the Pep Band.

Rogers High cooks help dogs, cats

The cooks at Rogers High School did their part to collect food for hungry dogs and cats at the eighth annual Camping for K-9s food drive.

The event collected more than 2,100 pounds of pet food and $500 for the Humane Society. In the past eight years the Rogers kitchen team has donated about 20,800 pounds of food and $5,300.

Grants to support health programs

Spokane Public Schools will receive a $500 grant for each of its elementary schools in the coming school year as part of the HealthierUS School Challenge.

According to an email from the district, the schools have been awarded the grants after the district organized Team Nutrition Advisory Councils, to get student input on the meal program. Office staff used the student information to complete the requirements on the grant application. The money is to be used for health, fitness or nutrition expenses.

Top volunteers named by district

Spokane Public Schools recently recognized Outstanding Volunteers from the district for the 2011-’12 academic year. The recipients were chosen from among roughly 13,000 volunteers.

The honored volunteers are:

Sheree Wilkinson, a volunteer at Roosevelt Elementary School. Wilkinson volunteered with vision screening.

Patricia Garvin, a volunteer in Shadle Park High School’s reading program.

Rita Mellema and Valerie Fuhs, volunteers for Lewis and Clark High School’s Tiger Closet.

Sue Livingston, a volunteer at Lewis and Clark High School, putting together school and levy literature, Parent-Teacher Student Group presentations and helping with MAP testing.

Jack Wiley, a volunteer at Jefferson Elementary School. Wiley volunteers for any job needing to be done at the school.

Comcast awards four scholarships

The Comcast Foundation announced local high school students who were awarded scholarships in the 2012-’13 annual Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program. The students were among 90 winners to receive awards in Western Washington and Spokane County.

The high school students are: Hope Gimbel, of St. George’s; Megan Davis, of Ferris; Rebecca Corsino, of North Central; and Karl Fencl, of Rogers.

The scholarship program awards $1,000 to students who are involved in their schools, served as role models and are active in their community. Overall, Comcast has awarded more than $17 million to more than 17,000 Leaders and Achievers Scholarship winners.

Gonzaga Prep students honored

Gonzaga Prep students Shannon Metzger, of Greenacres, and John Slater, of Spokane, were recently recognized for their integrity with the 2012 Saint Michael’s College Book Award for Academic Achievement with a Social Conscience.

The award is given to students who demonstrate a commitment to leadership in volunteer service and academic achievement. The recipients are high school juniors who are inductees of the National Honor Society or an equivalent school-sponsored honors organization. Metzger and Slater were presented with the book “First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers,” by Loung Ung. Ung is a 1993 Saint Michael’s College graduate.

St. George’s honors top graduates

St. George’s School 2012 graduates Jacob Kwasman and Kylie Mohr were awarded the Head of School Cup as the top students in their graduating class.

The award honors St. George’s seniors for academic and extracurricular achievements, in place of valedictorians. The seniors receive the award at the school’s graduation ceremony.
