Kliebphipat comes up short

Gonzaga University junior-to-be Tai Jade Kliebphipat, after leading 3-up through 14 holes, lost to Jennifer Yang 1-up during Thursday’s second round of match play at the 36th Women’s Amateur Public Links at Neshanic (N.J.) Golf Course.

Kliebphipat bogeyed Nos. 15 and 16 and double-bogeyed Nos. 17 and 18 to allow Yang, a sophomore-to-be at Washington, to rally.

Kliebphipat was the 43rd seed and Yang the 55th after stroke play on Monday and Tuesday.

• Idaho’s Kaitlyn Oster advanced to the quarterfinals of the 103rd Oregon Women’s State Amateur. Oster beat Gigi Stoll of Beaverton, Ore., 5 and 3 in match play.

In men’s play, Gonzaga’s Travis Johnsen lost 1-up to Steven DaSilva of Beaverton.

Roster correction

The Earl Barden All-Star Classic football game for 2A to 1B players is Saturday at 1 p.m. at East Valley High in Yakima.

Because of a communication error, the roster of local players printed in Tuesday’s Youth Notebook was incorrect. Here are the area players selected to play on the East team: Jason Jorgensen (RB) of Deer Park, Justin Berarducci (DB) of Colfax, Zach Mohr (WR) Deer Park, Dylan Ellsworth (DB) of West Valley, Justin Hause (LB) of Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls), Brandon Heide (OL) of East Valley, Alex Hachman (OL) of WV, Avery Smetana (OL) of Freeman, and Brent Stromberger (OL) of Lind-Ritzville-Sprague.

Junior hockey

The Spokane Chiefs will play five preseason games over three weeks in advance of the 2012-13 WHL regular season. 

Spokane will play in the Everett Silvertips’ tournament on Sept. 1 versus Everett, and Sept. 2 against Seattle.

The Chiefs will then play in the Tri-City Americans’ tournament with games on Sept. 7 against Everett and Sept. 8 against Tri-City in Kennewick.

The schedule will finish with one more trip to Kennewick to play Tri-City on Sept. 14.
