Baseball America names GU’s Gonzales to first team

Baseball: Baseball America on Friday named Gonzaga University sophomore pitcher/first baseman Marco Gonzales to its All-America first team.

Gonzales is the third Bulldog to receive first-team honors, joining Cody Martin (2011) and Nate Gold (2002). He made the team as a utility player.

Gonzales went 8-2 with a 1.55 ERA in 12 starts as a pitcher. As a batter, he hit .325 with 29 RBIs, 10 doubles and two home runs. He was named the West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year.

Ex-Coug Baynes an Olympian

Basketball: Former Washington State University men’s basketball player Aron Baynes is one of 12 members of the Australian Boomers 2012 Olympic team.

The team, coached by Brett Brown, assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA, includes Patty Mills, Matt Dellavedova, Joe Ingles, Adam Gibson, Peter Crawford, Brad Newley, David Barlow, David Andersen, Matt Neilsen, Mark Worthington, Aleks Maric and Baynes.

Baynes was a member of WSU’s team from 2006-09 and a two-year starter. He finished second on the team in scoring in 2008-09 (12.7 points per game) and tied for third in 2007-08 (10.4 ppg). He became the 30th player in WSU history to exceed 1,000 career points, finishing with 1,064.

Derby winner off to Japan

HORSE RACING: Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I’ll Have Another is headed to stud duty in Japan.

A representative of Paul Reddam said that the owner has reached an agreement to sell the colt to Shigeyuki Okada of Big Red Farm on the island of Hokkaido. Financial terms were not disclosed.

I’ll Have Another will stand at stud starting with the 2013 breeding season alongside two-time Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Conduit.
