Revealed Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade is unsure if he will be able to compete in the London Olympics. Wade told The Associated Press on Friday that he will soon have his ailing left knee examined, and acknowledges that surgery might be a possibility. Wade played through pain in this year’s playoffs, helping the Heat win the NBA Finals for the second time. Wade appeared in all 23 postseason games for Miami, averaging 22.8 points. Wade says he isn’t sure what the exact problem is with his knee, which was drained during the second round of the playoffs. He says he wants to play in the Olympics again, like he did when the Americans won bronze at Athens in 2004 and the “Redeem Team” took gold at Beijing during the 2008 Games. Play begins Monday.
Filed San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker is suing a New York City club and its operators for $20 million over a scratched retina he says he suffered during a fight involving singer Chris Brown and members of hip-hop star Drake’s entourage. The suit was filed in New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan. It says the W.i.P club in SoHo and its operators were negligent in security and supervision, which allowed the fight to take place. Chris Brown, his girlfriend and his bodyguard were among eight injured during the fight inside the club last week. Affirmed The National Basketball Players Association said that arbitrator Kenneth Dam affirmed its position that players claimed off waivers can use their “Bird” and “Early Bird” rights. The union argued that Jeremy Lin, Knicks teammate Steve Novak, the Clippers’ Chauncey Billups and Portland’s J.J. Hickson should be covered by the exceptions that allow clubs to exceed their salary caps to re-sign their own players. All four players were waived this season and claimed by other teams. They will become free agents July 1. The ruling should help the Knicks’ hopes of keeping both Lin and Novak.
Announced Louisville and Florida International announced a three-game series that will start on Dec. 19. Rick Pitino coaches the Cardinals; his son and former assistant coach Richard Pitino was hired earlier this year to take over at FIU. FIU will return to Louisville in the 2013-14 season. Louisville would visit FIU the next season.
Suspended Major League Soccer suspended Portland Timbers defender Hanyer Mosquera for three games for striking L.A. forward Jack McBean during the Galaxy’s 1-0 victory last Sunday night. MLS said in a release that Mosquera was also fined, though the amount was not disclosed. Mosquera’s suspension will begin Sunday, when the Timbers host Seattle Sounders FC.
