Acquired The Philadelphia Flyers acquired defenseman Luke Schenn from the Toronto Maple Leafs for forward James van Riemsdyk. Schenn should help replace the void created by the loss of captain Chris Pronger, who is unlikely to return due to concussion symptoms.

Agreed The San Jose Sharks agreed to terms on a three-year contract with newly acquired defenseman Brad Stuart that will prevent him from becoming a free agent.

• The Colorado Avalanche locked up one of their promising young forwards, signing Matt Duchene to a two-year deal.

Announced Tennis player Serena Williams said she and sister Venus “have no intention of stopping” their tennis careers any time soon. Williams said that she enjoys competing, adding: “I love holding trophies.”

Removed The blue clay that made Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic feel, well, blue at last month’s Madrid Open is going away. In a posting on the tour’s website, ATP President Brad Drewett said he decided blue clay courts will not be allowed at tour events next season.

Achieved Jockey Chris DeCarlo rode his 1,000th winner, guiding Oconee Gold to victory in the eighth race at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J. The 44-year-old DeCarlo also won the seventh race aboard Don’twait Toolong.

Missed Double- amputee runner Oscar Pistorius again missed South Africa’s qualifying time for the London Olympics, almost a second off the mark in winning a 400-meter race in Brussels. He has at least one more chance to qualify at the African Championships in Benin next week.

Fined The Union of European Football Associations said it has handed the Russian soccer federation a fine of $44,000 for crowd disturbances by the team’s fans at a European Championship match. UEFA said the punishment relates to “the setting off and throwing of fireworks by spectators, and displaying of illicit banners” during the Group A match against Greece on June 16.
